Announcement System Required in the Safety Concept

The requirement often comes late – and is briefly worded

Many event organisers only learn during the permit process that they must provide an announcement system for evacuation and hazard announcements that reaches all visitor areas. What exactly is meant is rarely spelled out. Anyone who then orders just an additional music PA at short notice often fails to meet the requirement – and in the worst case only notices in an emergency.

What the requirement usually means in practice

As a rule, it means a system that allows event management or security staff to inform all visitors quickly and clearly in an emergency. Typical requirements are: all areas of the site are covered, not just the area in front of the main stage. Announcements take priority over the music programme. The system keeps working during a power failure. And the safety concept records where the loudspeakers are, who may trigger announcements and which announcement texts have been prepared.

What the announcement system should be able to do

Six points help with the selection: Does the system cover the entire area, including entrances, escape routes and outer zones? Can the running programme be interrupted at all stages at the push of a button? Is the power supply independent of the event power, for example via battery? Does triggering work without mobile networks and internet, which are often overloaded on a full site? Is speech intelligibility ensured even in noisy conditions? And does the system meet DIN EN 50849 for electro-acoustic emergency warning systems?

How NIKOS meets the requirement without new cabling

NIKOS integrates the existing stage and PA systems: at every stage an NIKOS [audio]² announcement unit is connected between the mixing desk and the amplifier. Areas without their own sound system are covered by the mobile outdoor loudspeaker NIKOS [horn]². From the central control unit NIKOS [dispatcher]² announcements are sent to all or to selected areas. The system runs on its own self-sufficient radio network and operates for up to 16 hours on battery. NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849; your regional NIKOS partner helps you integrate it into your safety concept.

Plan in good time

Please enquire at least four weeks before the event if possible. Exclusively usable frequencies are applied for with the frequency regulator for every deployment, and locations and responsibilities should already be part of the safety concept. A deployment at short notice is still possible, with increased fees for the frequency application.

Questions & answers

Often only to a limited extent: a stage PA usually does not reach all areas of the site and fails during a power cut or a technical defect. NIKOS integrates the existing stage systems and adds battery-powered loudspeakers and central triggering.
NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electro-acoustic emergency warning systems). Other standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 or DIN 14675 do not apply to the field of use of NIKOS. Your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you.
This is defined in the safety concept – usually event management or the security service. An operator is always required for announcements and monitoring – either your own staff after a briefing or a technician from the NIKOS partner.
