Crisis communication for CHIO Aachen

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

warnings must still get through even when mobile networks are overloaded

At CHIO Aachen, high visitor density, loud ambient noise and time-critical procedures come together. In a dangerous situation, warnings and instructions must reach spectators, staff and emergency services clearly and understandably. Public communication networks quickly reach their limits when crowds are large. Different audience areas also make fast, targeted information difficult without fixed infrastructure.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, visitor information and control in a single, network-independent platform. With NIKOS [dispatcher]², individual announcement locations, targeted areas or the entire site can be addressed; NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission on site via radio and outputs it as an analogue audio signal, and NIKOS [horn]² adds acoustic output at locations without an existing public address system. Quickly deployable, radio-based units reduce cable runs, separate control units and operating and security posts, because recurring tasks are centrally controlled and monitored or carried out by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do announcements with NIKOS comply with the applicable standards?+
Yes. NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electro-acoustic emergency warning systems). NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alarm applications and is technically designed for use in everyday and emergency situations. For electro-acoustic emergency warning systems, DIN EN 50849 is the key reference framework. The requirements set out there are fully met by NIKOS - unlike mobile-network-based systems - because it does not depend on an external network and is therefore available immediately at any time. Other standards known from security technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), are not applicable to NIKOS's field of use and functional scope and are therefore not relevant for approval. NIKOS is an announcement system for temporary and mobile applications and has been used successfully many times since 2017 to implement mission-critical communication tasks. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the many functions of NIKOS and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS create cost advantages?+
Depending on the use case, NIKOS can implement different functions via a single communication platform. The rental and installation costs of NIKOS can be quickly offset by these savings. You can find some concrete examples of savings here. When the many functions are used consistently, this often leads not only to higher safety levels and easier work for staff, but also to savings in the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. NIKOS also allows personnel to be replaced in a targeted way: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operating posts distributed across the site are handled from a single location via central announcements, remote control and status monitoring - so staff can be saved or deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. This means rental and installation costs are offset by savings in personnel and other technology. Especially at temporary, time-limited events, this significantly reduces the costs of planning, setup and operation of the safety technology.
Does crisis communication at CHIO Aachen remain available in the event of a power or network failure?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. This makes the system resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable runs but communicates via radio, the connection automatically restores itself after an interruption. NIKOS is therefore more resilient to disruptions in normal operation than many other systems and demonstrates the crisis suitability of this communication system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of runtime and also supplies connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider is hacked, or someone pulls the wrong plug, NIKOS continues to work. This means crisis communication for CHIO Aachen remains reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Which additional functions are relevant alongside announcements?+
Visual signals via NIKOS [flash]² make safety-relevant instructions visible even where ambient noise makes acoustic perception difficult. NIKOS [LED]² provides emergency lighting, while NIKOS [relay]² switches external devices. This integrates additional safety functions into the same system without having to set up separate control technology.
