NIKOS – Marathon

Crisis Communication for City Runs

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Keep long route sections immediately reachable

During a city run, the route extends along long, narrow sections of road with separate start, finish and spectator zones. In a crisis situation, it is crucial to coordinate course marshals, medical personnel, stewards and volunteers simultaneously and precisely, while the event places heavy demands on public networks. Road closures often remain in place for only a short time, so up-to-date feedback from individual points along the route must be available without delay. High spectator density and considerable noise make conditions even more challenging in the start and finish areas, where unclear announcements can create additional risks.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, visitor information and control in a single, network-independent platform. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units as required, targeting individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire event grounds. NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission on site via radio and outputs it as an analogue audio signal. NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output at locations without an existing public address system, integrating the start, finish and critical points along the route without complex cabling. This reduces the effort required for materials, cabling and support, as quickly deployable, radio-based units bring together different standalone systems and control solutions.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do announcements made with NIKOS comply with the applicable standards?+
Yes. NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant public address and alerting applications and is technically designed for use in both everyday and emergency situations. For electroacoustic emergency warning systems, DIN EN 50849 is the relevant reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets the requirements specified therein, as it does not depend on an external network and can therefore be used immediately at any time. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to the field of use and functional scope of NIKOS and are therefore not relevant for approval. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been successfully deployed in numerous mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
How can course marshals be specifically integrated during a city run?+
NIKOS [dispatcher]² can be used to control individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire event grounds separately. This ensures that course marshals at key points receive the same information simultaneously at all times, without messages having to be relayed through several intermediate points. This enables efficient coordination during road closures, area openings and safety-related changes.
Is NIKOS resilient in a crisis?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communications networks and their availability. The system is highly resistant to external influences. As NIKOS does not rely on cable routes but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS therefore responds far more resiliently to disruptions in normal operations than many other systems, demonstrating the crisis readiness of this communication system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has pulled the wrong plug, NIKOS continues to operate. This ensures that crisis communication for the city run remains reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communications networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed quickly and flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor operations without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules within a few minutes on various structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. Under certain circumstances, NIKOS can also use an existing digital radio network.
