NIKOS – Sportevent

Crisis communication for the Leipzig Triathlon

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Keep the course, transition zone and finish area reachable at all times

At the Leipzig Triathlon, the course is spread over a long distance, the schedule is tightly timed, and important operational areas are distributed across a wide area. This makes reliable communication across all course sections and operational zones a challenge—especially when road closures or changing deployment locations have to be coordinated at short notice. Another critical factor is that, with large numbers of spectators and participants, mobile networks can quickly become overloaded and cannot be relied on for dependable announcements.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Instead of multiple separate solutions: NIKOS unites visitor information, system monitoring, visitor guidance and control in a single network-independent platform. For events such as the Leipzig Triathlon, NIKOS combines announcements, alarm notification, information announcements, remote control and status monitoring in a single platform. The system ensures that information can be transmitted even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units for individual announcement locations, targeted areas or the entire venue; NIKOS [audio]² receives voice transmissions via radio on site and outputs them as an analogue audio signal. At locations without an existing sound reinforcement system, NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output, allowing quickly deployable, radio-based units to replace long cable runs and additional speaker lines. By combining multiple control and monitoring functions in a single platform, the need for separate loudspeaker systems, dedicated control devices and specialist personnel to install and manage different subsystems is reduced. When the wide range of functions is used consistently, material, installation and staffing requirements are reduced because recurring tasks are centrally controlled and monitored or carried out by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Are announcements made via NIKOS standard-compliant?+
Yes — NIKOS fully meets DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). The system was designed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting tasks, technically built for everyday operation as well as for emergencies. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 sets out the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based solutions — does not depend on any external network, it is always immediately usable and fully meets the requirements set out in the standard. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 or DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are therefore not relevant for NIKOS in terms of approval. Since 2017, NIKOS has been used successfully many times a public address system for temporary and mobile applications in mission-critical communication tasks. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS create cost advantages at the Leipzig Triathlon?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can implement different functions via a single, unified communication platform. The rental and installation costs of NIKOS can be quickly offset by these savings. Some specific examples of potential savings can be found here. When the wide range of functions is used consistently, it often results not only in a higher level of safety and easier work for employees, but even in savings across the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. NIKOS can also specifically reduce staffing requirements: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operator posts distributed across the venue can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This allows staff to be reduced or deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. In this way, rental and installation costs are offset by savings in personnel and other technology. This significantly reduces the costs of planning, setup and operation of safety technology, particularly at temporary, time-limited events.
Is NIKOS resilient in a crisis at the Leipzig Triathlon?+
NIKOS operates over its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Because NIKOS communicates via radio rather than relying on cable routes, the connection is automatically restored after an interruption. NIKOS is therefore much more resilient to disruptions of normal operations than many other systems, demonstrating the crisis resilience of this communication system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also powers connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has pulled the wrong plug, NIKOS continues to operate. This keeps crisis communication for the Leipzig Triathlon reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
How can NIKOS be installed along the course at short notice?+
NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within just a few minutes on a variety of structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. Under certain circumstances, NIKOS can also use an existing digital radio network.
