NIKOS – Lange Nacht der Museen

Crisis Communication for the Long Night of Museums in Berlin

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Warnings must reach many venues simultaneously

The Long Night of Museums in Berlin distributes visitors across numerous venues, with people moving between them throughout the evening. In the event of a disruption, warnings and instructions must reach different locations simultaneously, even though the venues do not form one contiguous site. Public mobile networks are under strain when visitor density and the number of simultaneous users are high, making crisis communication processes based solely on mobile networks a risk. In addition, local teams, event management and external personnel must all work with clear, consistent information.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS brings together announcements, alerting, visitor guidance and device control in a single network-independent platform. At the distributed venues, radio-based units are deployed wherever safety-critical announcements are required. NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission by radio on site and outputs it as an analogue audio signal. NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output at locations without an existing public address system. This reduces the need for separate loudspeaker equipment, long cable runs and additional operating and reporting stations.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS meet the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes, NIKOS is standard-compliant: the system meets DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting — usable both in everyday operation and in an emergency. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the decisive reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets these requirements because it operates independently of an external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at any time. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) do not apply to NIKOS, since they concern a different field of use and functional scope. As a public address system for temporary and mobile deployments, NIKOS has already been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
How can different Long Night venues be addressed selectively?+
NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units as required, targeting individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site. This ensures that safety-critical announcements are issued only where visitors need to be informed or directed. At the same time, a central announcement to all connected locations remains available at all times.
Is NIKOS resilient in a crisis?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. Because NIKOS does not rely on cable routes but communicates by radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. This keeps crisis communication functions for the Long Night reliably operational even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed quickly and flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules on different structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees within a few minutes and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. This rapid placement of the units also makes deployment at changing locations straightforward.
