NIKOS – Basel Tattoo

Crowd Management for the Basel Tattoo

autonomous reliable cost-effective
Challenge

Guide visitors safely at the touch of a button

At the Basel Tattoo, crowd management is a particular challenge due to overcrowding, a noisy environment and international visitors. In an emergency, warnings and instructions must clearly reach individual areas or the entire event site. The high visitor density also puts a strain on the mobile network and makes reliable communication more difficult.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Announcements, system monitoring, crowd management and device control come together with NIKOS in a single platform independent of the public network. NIKOS [dispatcher]² centrally controls individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site, while monitoring the system and handling communication. This makes it possible to reduce the number of crowd control and reporting posts or deploy them specifically at safety-critical points. At the same time, the effort required to set up and support the communications technology is reduced.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS meet the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes, NIKOS is standard-compliant: the system meets DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting — usable both in everyday operation and in an emergency. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the decisive reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets these requirements because it operates independently of an external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at any time. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) do not apply to NIKOS, since they concern a different field of use and functional scope. As a public address system for temporary and mobile deployments, NIKOS has already been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on NIKOS’s many functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Is NIKOS crisis-proof?+
Yes, NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communications networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cables but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically restored after an interruption. NIKOS is therefore far more resilient to disruptions in normal operations than many other systems, demonstrating the crisis resilience of this communications system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has pulled out the wrong plug, NIKOS continues to operate. This means that crowd management for the Basel Tattoo remains reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communications networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed at short notice and used flexibly?+
Yes, NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within just a few minutes on a range of structures, such as streetlamps, stages, trees, stalls or decorations, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. NIKOS also uses an existing digital radio network.
Where does using NIKOS provide cost benefits?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can combine different functions on a single communications platform. These savings can quickly offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. You can find some specific examples of savings here. When its many functions are used consistently, NIKOS not only increases the level of safety and makes work easier for employees, but often also reduces the overall budget. For crowd management and other safety-related coordination tasks, this means that NO separate loudspeaker, control and communications solutions are required — NIKOS combines employee alerts, visitor information and system control on a single platform. This reduces the need for materials and cabling, as well as the risk of tripping over cable ramps. NIKOS can also specifically replace personnel: tasks that would otherwise require several crowd control, reporting or operator posts distributed across the site can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This enables personnel to be reduced or deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. Rental and installation costs are therefore offset by savings on personnel and other technology. Especially for temporary, time-limited events, this significantly reduces the costs of planning, setup and operation of the safety technology.
