NIKOS – Festival

Crowd Management for Lollapalooza Berlin

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Site-wide alerts despite stage noise and high visitor density

Lollapalooza Berlin brings together high visitor density, live stage operations and constantly changing crowd flows in front of stages, along paths and at entrances. Safety-critical announcements can quickly get lost in music, crowd noise and dense crowds unless they are delivered clearly and across the entire site. In the event of severe weather, overcrowding or an incident, visitors throughout the site must receive clear instructions within a matter of seconds. At the same time, public mobile networks are often overloaded during such peaks in demand, making them unsuitable for mission-critical communication.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

One platform for everything: NIKOS unites visitor information, alerting, crowd management and control in a single, network-independent system. NIKOS [dispatcher]² centrally controls the announcement units and assigns them to individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site. NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission on site via radio and outputs it as an analogue audio signal. NIKOS [horn]² extends acoustic coverage to locations without an existing public address system. This reduces cabling and installation requirements, allowing NIKOS to be deployed quickly.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do announcements made with NIKOS comply with the applicable standards?+
Yes. NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant public address and alerting applications and is technically designed for use in both everyday and emergency situations. For electroacoustic emergency warning systems, DIN EN 50849 is the relevant reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets the requirements specified therein, as it does not depend on an external network and can therefore be used immediately at any time. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to the field of use and functional scope of NIKOS and are therefore not relevant for approval. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been successfully deployed in numerous mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS deliver cost benefits?+
NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. In addition, central tasks can be handled from one location, eliminating the need for reporting, operating or coordination routes distributed across the site. This significantly reduces personnel and technical costs. Especially for temporary, time-limited events, this noticeably reduces the effort required to plan, set up and operate the safety technology.
Is NIKOS crisis-resilient at Lollapalooza?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and independently of public communication networks. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also powers connected accessory modules. This ensures that crowd management for Lollapalooza Berlin remains reliably operational even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed quickly and flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was developed for flexible outdoor operations without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within a few minutes on various structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power outlet is sufficient for continuous operation.
