Crowd Management for Open-Air Concerts in Hamburg

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Direct visitors quickly and precisely when overcrowding occurs

Open-air concerts in Hamburg bring together large visitor numbers, high stage volumes and densely crowded routes. In such situations, safety-critical announcements must remain reliably intelligible. In the event of overcrowding, severe weather or an incident, visitor flows must be directed within a very short time so that bottlenecks do not become even more congested. At the same time, public mobile networks are often heavily overloaded when visitor density is high and are not reliable enough for mission-critical communication.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Announcements, system monitoring, crowd management and device control come together with NIKOS in a single platform independent of the public network. For events such as open-air concerts in Hamburg, NIKOS combines communication and control functions on a single platform. NIKOS [audio]² receives voice transmissions via radio and outputs them as an analogue audio signal; NIKOS [horn]² adds locations without an existing public address system. Depending on requirements, NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site. This reduces equipment requirements, cabling work and the need for staff to travel between locations.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Is NIKOS designed to meet the relevant standards for announcements?+
Yes, indeed: NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. The system was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting and is technically designed for both everyday operation and emergency situations. DIN EN 50849 represents the relevant reference framework for ELA systems. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS does not depend on any external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at all times — fully meeting the standard as a result. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to NIKOS, as they are not applicable to radio-based public address systems like NIKOS. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does Crowd Management deliver cost savings?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can implement different functions via a single, unified communication platform. This reduces equipment requirements, cabling work and personnel costs. When its wide range of functions is used consistently, it often not only increases the level of safety and makes employees’ work easier, but also delivers savings across the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. This reduces equipment requirements, cabling work and the risk of people tripping over cable ramps. In addition, NIKOS can specifically replace personnel: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operator posts distributed across the site can be handled from a single location using central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This allows personnel to be reduced or deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced events: monitoring emergency exit gates technically with NIKOS can cover their guarding requirements, meaning that guards at emergency exits can be eliminated or deployed more effectively elsewhere. This offsets rental and installation costs through savings in personnel and other technology. Especially at temporary, time-limited events, this significantly reduces the costs of planning, installing and operating safety technology.
Does Crowd Management remain functional when the mobile network is overloaded?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and independently of public communication networks. This makes the system resilient to disruptions during normal operation. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable routes but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also powers connected accessory modules. Even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks, Crowd Management remains reliably functional.
How quickly can NIKOS be installed at a concert venue?+
NIKOS was developed specifically for flexible outdoor applications without permanent infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules on a range of structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, within just a few minutes and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power outlet is sufficient for continuous operation. This means NIKOS is ready for use quickly.
