NIKOS – Festumzug

Crowd Management for the Düsseldorf Carnival

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Safely coordinate visitor flows

Crowd management at the Düsseldorf Carnival presents particular challenges due to dense crowds, high noise levels and visitors who speak different languages. At intersections, along parade routes and in front of heavily frequented areas, visitor flows must be directed at an early stage to prevent critical crowd build-ups. Warnings and instructions must remain clearly understandable even in high-noise environments. The high visitor density can also overload mobile networks, meaning that mobile-network-based communication is not sufficient for safety-critical measures.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Announcements, system monitoring, crowd management and device control come together with NIKOS in a single platform independent of the public network. Central announcements and remote control via NIKOS [dispatcher]² make it possible to coordinate visitor flows from a single location and deploy personnel precisely at safety-critical points. Switching external devices via NIKOS [relay]² and controlling emergency lighting via NIKOS [LED]² reduce the need for separate control units, cabling and different subsystems.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS meet the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes, NIKOS is standard-compliant: the system meets DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting — usable both in everyday operation and in an emergency. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the decisive reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets these requirements because it operates independently of an external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at any time. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) do not apply to NIKOS, since they concern a different field of use and functional scope. As a public address system for temporary and mobile deployments, NIKOS has already been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does using NIKOS create cost benefits?+
NIKOS combines visitor information, employee alerting and system control on a single communications platform. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. Central announcements, remote control and status monitoring replace distributed reporting and operating posts. As a result, personnel remain available for safety-critical tasks. Savings in personnel, technology, planning, installation and operation reduce the total costs of temporary events.
Is NIKOS resilient in a crisis?+
Yes, NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. The system remains operational when public networks fail or are disrupted. As NIKOS communicates wirelessly and requires no cable routes, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. NIKOS continues to function even when the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider is unavailable or the power supply is interrupted. This keeps crowd-management measures for the Düsseldorf Carnival operational.
Can NIKOS be deployed at short notice and used flexibly?+
Yes, NIKOS was developed for short-notice outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules within a few minutes on lampposts, stages, stands or trees and configure them for the respective deployment location. A standard Schuko power outlet is sufficient for continuous operation.
