NIKOS – Volksfest

Crowd Management for the Gillamoos in Abensberg

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Safety announcements must be heard despite beer tent noise and crowds

The Gillamoos festival in Abensberg brings very large numbers of visitors together with beer tents, fairground attractions and consistently high noise levels. Clear safety announcements are essential for crowd management when entrances need to be temporarily relieved, visitor flows redirected or areas cleared in an orderly manner. When visitor density is high, the mobile network can quickly become overloaded; power outages or disruptions to public networks can also make coordinated communication during a crisis more difficult.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

One platform for everything: NIKOS unites visitor information, alerting, crowd management and control in a single, network-independent system. For events such as the Gillamoos in Abensberg, NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site, allowing situation updates and instructions to be issued without parallel operating procedures. At locations without an existing public address system, NIKOS [horn]² provides the acoustic output and integrates peripheral areas into the announcement infrastructure. Staff travel, operating duties and guard posts are reduced because recurring tasks are controlled centrally and monitored or carried out by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do announcements made with NIKOS comply with the applicable standards?+
Yes. NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant public address and alerting applications and is technically designed for use in both everyday and emergency situations. For electroacoustic emergency warning systems, DIN EN 50849 is the relevant reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets the requirements specified therein, as it does not depend on an external network and can therefore be used immediately at any time. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to the field of use and functional scope of NIKOS and are therefore not relevant for approval. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been successfully deployed in numerous mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
How do announcements remain intelligible when loud music systems are operating?+
NIKOS [audio]² interrupts the fairground operators’ music systems for the duration of an announcement. This reduces the background noise level, making safety-critical announcements much easier to understand. If required, existing music systems can be used for announcements, eliminating the need to set up a separate public address system.
Does crowd management at the Gillamoos also work when the mobile network is overloaded?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own independent radio network and is completely separate from public communication networks and their availability. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. This means that crowd management for the Gillamoos remains reliably operational even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed at short notice and used flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was developed specifically for flexible outdoor deployments without permanent infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules on a range of structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, within just a few minutes and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation.
