NIKOS – Marathon

Crowd Management for the Hamburg Stadtlauf

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Direct spectators at the start, finish and along the route

During the Hamburg Stadtlauf, runners, spectators, volunteers and security personnel are spread across a long urban route. Bottlenecks, crossings, as well as the start and finish areas must be coordinated in line with the schedule so that visitor flows do not conflict with ongoing operations. At the same time, spectators in the start and finish areas need clear information whenever access points are controlled or areas need to be relieved.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

One platform for everything: NIKOS unites visitor information, alerting, crowd management and control in a single, network-independent system. Along the route, rapidly deployable, radio-based units replace long cable runs and separate announcement points. NIKOS [horn]² provides audio output at locations without an existing public address system, while central control and monitoring through NIKOS reduce the need for personnel, control stations and additional equipment. This lowers installation effort, cabling requirements and the coordination effort during operations.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS adhere to the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes. The basis is DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems, whose requirements NIKOS fully meets. Developed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting applications, NIKOS is technically designed for everyday use as well as for emergency situations. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based systems — does not depend on an external network, immediate usability is guaranteed at all times, meaning the standard is fully met. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are not relevant for the approval of NIKOS. Since its market launch in 2017, NIKOS has been the leading public address system for temporary and mobile applications, used successfully at some of the largest open-air events in Europe. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where do cost advantages arise during the city run?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can provide a range of functions through a single communication platform. This often quickly offsets rental and installation costs. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. Personnel costs can also be reduced, as tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or control stations distributed across the site can be centrally controlled and monitored or carried out by NIKOS. This allows personnel resources to be deployed more effectively or used more efficiently at safety-critical points.
Does communication remain operational in the event of a network failure or an overloaded mobile network?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is therefore independent of public communication networks and their availability. This makes the system resilient to external influences and keeps it operational even when regular operations are disrupted. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. This means that crowd management at the Hamburg Stadtlauf remains reliably operational even in the event of a network failure, an overloaded mobile network or a power outage.
How are the start, finish and individual sections of the route addressed differently?+
NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units as required for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site. This ensures that information is provided only where it is needed, for example at bottlenecks, crossings, waiting areas or in the finish area. This makes coordination between course marshals, medical personnel and event management easier.
