NIKOS – Lange Nacht der Museen

Crowd Management for the Long Night of Museums in Berlin

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Direct visitor flows between multiple locations

During the Long Night of Museums in Berlin, visitors are spread across numerous museum locations, routes and waiting areas. When visitor numbers are high, information about entrances, temporary closures or changed visitor routes must reach the right places quickly and clearly. At the same time, public communication networks are quickly overloaded when large numbers of visitors are concentrated in one area, meaning that mobile-network-based information channels are not sufficient for safety-critical announcements.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Announcements, system monitoring, crowd management and device control come together with NIKOS in a single platform independent of the public network. NIKOS [audio]² receives voice transmissions and outputs them as an analogue audio signal to existing public address systems. At locations without an existing public address system, NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output. This eliminates the need for additional temporary public address equipment and extensive cable runs. Visitor information can be triggered across multiple locations from a single, unified operating environment.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS meet the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes, NIKOS is standard-compliant: the system meets DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting — usable both in everyday operation and in an emergency. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the decisive reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets these requirements because it operates independently of an external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at any time. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) do not apply to NIKOS, since they concern a different field of use and functional scope. As a public address system for temporary and mobile deployments, NIKOS has already been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS deliver cost benefits?+
With NIKOS, several safety-critical coordination tasks are implemented via a single communication platform. The rental and installation costs of NIKOS are quickly offset by the savings achieved. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. In addition, staff travel, operator stations and security posts are reduced because recurring tasks are centrally controlled and monitored or carried out by NIKOS.
Does NIKOS function when the mobile network is overloaded?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. Because NIKOS does not rely on cable connections but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also powers connected accessory modules. This means that crowd management for the Long Night of Museums remains reliably operational even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
How can different visitor areas during the Long Night of Museums be addressed selectively?+
NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units as required for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site. For the Long Night of Museums, this makes it possible to address individual museum locations, waiting areas or several connected locations together. Areas where visitors need to be guided or informed therefore receive targeted announcements instead of general messages to everyone.
