Crowd Management for Wacken Open Air in Schleswig-Holstein

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Direct crowd flows in densely packed areas

At Wacken Open Air in Schleswig-Holstein, crowd management is particularly challenging due to dense crowds, a noisy environment and international visitors. If the situation changes, visitors must be informed quickly and directed specifically to safe areas. The high visitor density can overload mobile networks, meaning that mobile-network-based communication channels may not be reliably available in a crisis.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Announcements, system monitoring, crowd management and device control come together with NIKOS in a single platform independent of the public network. For Wacken Open Air, central operation via NIKOS [dispatcher]² makes it possible to coordinate announcements and control functions from a single location. This reduces the need for distributed reporting and operating posts, as well as for separate control devices and cabling.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Is NIKOS designed to meet the relevant standards for announcements?+
Yes, indeed: NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. The system was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting and is technically designed for both everyday operation and emergency situations. DIN EN 50849 represents the relevant reference framework for ELA systems. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS does not depend on any external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at all times — fully meeting the standard as a result. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to NIKOS, as they are not applicable to radio-based public address systems like NIKOS. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS deliver cost benefits?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can be used to implement various functions via a single, unified communication platform. These savings can quickly offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. Some specific examples of savings can be found here. When its wide range of functions is used consistently, NIKOS often not only increases the level of safety and makes work easier for employees, but can even generate savings in the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. NIKOS can also replace personnel in specific roles: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operating posts distributed across the site can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This can reduce staffing requirements or allow personnel to be deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced events such as festivals: monitoring emergency exit gates technically with NIKOS can cover the gate security function, meaning that guards at emergency exits can be eliminated or deployed more effectively elsewhere. This offsets rental and installation costs through savings in personnel and other technology. Especially for temporary, time-limited events, this significantly reduces the costs of planning, installing and operating safety technology.
Is NIKOS crisis-proof?+
Yes, NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable routes but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS is therefore significantly more resilient to disruptions in normal operations than many other systems and is suitable for use in crises. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also powers connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has pulled the wrong plug, NIKOS continues to operate. This means that crowd management for Wacken Open Air remains reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed quickly and flexibly?+
Yes, NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor applications without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules on various structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees within just a few minutes and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. When required, NIKOS can also use an existing digital radio network.
