Crowd management for the Gentse Feesten: directing visitor flows precisely

autonomous reliable cost-effective
Challenge

Guide visitors safely from one point

During the Gentse Feesten, crowd management is particularly challenging because of dense crowds, noisy surroundings and international visitors. In heavily frequented areas, warnings and instructions must reach everyone quickly and clearly. At this level of attendance, mobile networks can become congested, making systems dependent on mobile communications unsuitable in a crisis.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

One platform for everything: NIKOS unites visitor information, alerting, crowd management and control in a single, network-independent system. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls announcement units for individual locations, selected zones or the entire event site. This allows visitor flows to be coordinated from one operating point and reduces the need for distributed reporting and operating posts.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Are announcements made via NIKOS standard-compliant?+
Yes — NIKOS fully meets DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). The system was designed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting tasks, technically built for everyday operation as well as for emergencies. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 sets out the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based solutions — does not depend on any external network, it is always immediately usable and fully meets the requirements set out in the standard. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 or DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are therefore not relevant for NIKOS in terms of approval. Since 2017, NIKOS has been used successfully many times as the market-leading public address system for temporary and mobile applications in mission-critical communication tasks. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Does NIKOS continue to operate if mobile networks or the power supply fail?+
Yes. NIKOS operates through its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communications networks. Because the system communicates by radio, it restores the connection automatically after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also supplies connected accessory modules. This keeps crowd management for the Gentse Feesten reliably operational during a power failure or disruptions to public communications networks.
Can NIKOS be installed flexibly at temporary locations?+
Yes. NIKOS was designed for flexible outdoor use without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules within minutes on structures such as lamp posts, stages, trees, stalls or decorations and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. NIKOS uses an existing digital radio network when one is available.
How does NIKOS support compliance with night-time noise restrictions?+
The night-time quiet function in NIKOS [dispatcher]² centrally switches off all connected sound systems at the touch of a button. This supports the approval process and helps prevent complaints from local residents.
