Electroacoustic emergency warning system for the open-air concert

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Delivering intelligible emergency announcements despite stage noise

At an open-air concert, stage operations, audience noise and changing wind directions can mask safety-critical announcements. When severe weather, overcrowding or an incident requires rapid instructions, individual areas or the entire site must be reached without delay. High noise levels and the lack of permanent infrastructure make it difficult to communicate information reliably to all spectators. In addition, mobile networks are often unreliable due to the high density of visitors, meaning conventional public address systems quickly reach their limits.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS brings together announcements, alerting, visitor guidance and device control in a single network-independent platform. For events such as an open-air concert, NIKOS combines the control, monitoring and delivery of safety-critical announcements in one platform. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units as needed for individual announcement locations, designated areas or the entire site. NIKOS [audio]² receives voice transmissions on site via radio and outputs them as an analogue audio signal; NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output at locations without an existing sound reinforcement system. Centralised operation via NIKOS [dispatcher]² and the consolidation of functions in one platform reduce the need for separate loudspeaker systems, dedicated control devices and different subsystems. Additional functions such as visual signalling via the NIKOS [flash]² beacon, emergency lighting via the NIKOS [LED]² floodlight and switching external devices via NIKOS [relay]² complement the consolidated functionality and create synergies for the application.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Is NIKOS designed to meet the relevant standards for announcements?+
Yes, indeed: NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. The system was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting and is technically designed for both everyday operation and emergency situations. DIN EN 50849 represents the relevant reference framework for ELA systems. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS does not depend on any external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at all times — fully meeting the standard as a result. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to NIKOS, as they are not applicable to radio-based public address systems like NIKOS. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
How does the emergency warning system remain independent of public networks?+
NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and does not depend on mobile communications, Wi-Fi or the internet. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. This means that electroacoustic emergency warning systems for open-air concerts remain reliably operational even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be installed on a concert site at short notice?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor use without permanent infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within a few minutes on various structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation.
How can areas without an existing PA system be reached?+
At locations without an existing sound reinforcement system, NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output. This makes it possible to provide entrances, ancillary areas, waiting zones or paths with safety-critical announcements without installing a separate PA system there. Control is provided via NIKOS [dispatcher]² for individual announcement locations, designated areas or the entire site.
