NIKOS – Volksfest

Emergency Announcements for Folk Festivals in Bavaria

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Safety announcements must remain clear despite tent noise and crowds

Folk festivals in Bavaria bring together large visitor numbers, confined areas for movement and the continuously loud sound systems of fairground operators. In a hazardous situation, warnings and instructions must be delivered quickly and unambiguously and be understandable to all visitors. At the same time, mobile networks can quickly become overloaded when visitor density is high, meaning that mobile-network-based communication channels are not sufficient for emergency announcements.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, visitor information and control in a single, network-independent platform. NIKOS [dispatcher]² can address individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site, combining emergency announcements, visual signaling via NIKOS [flash]², emergency lighting via NIKOS [LED]² and switching operations via NIKOS [relay]² in a single user interface. NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission locally via radio and outputs it as an analog audio signal; NIKOS [horn]² supplements the audio output at locations without an existing sound system. This reduces material, installation and operating costs because fewer separate control devices, cable routes and operator stations are required.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS adhere to the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes. The basis is DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems, whose requirements NIKOS fully meets. Developed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting applications, NIKOS is technically designed for everyday use as well as for emergency situations. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based systems — does not depend on an external network, immediate usability is guaranteed at all times, meaning the standard is fully met. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are not relevant for the approval of NIKOS. Since its market launch in 2017, NIKOS has been the leading public address system for temporary and mobile applications, used successfully at some of the largest open-air events in Europe. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS deliver cost advantages?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can implement a range of different functions via a single, unified communications platform. You can find some specific examples of potential savings here. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. In addition, staff travel, operator stations and security posts can be reduced because recurring tasks are centrally controlled, monitored and carried out by NIKOS.
How do announcements remain intelligible despite loud sound systems?+
NIKOS [audio]² interrupts the fairground operators' sound systems for the duration of an announcement. This reduces the background noise level and significantly improves announcement intelligibility. NIKOS also uses existing sound systems for announcements, so no separate announcement sound system needs to be installed.
Is NIKOS resilient in a crisis?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and independently of public communications networks and their availability. This makes the system resilient to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable routes but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS is therefore resilient to disruptions of normal operations. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has pulled out the wrong plug, NIKOS continues to operate. This ensures that emergency announcements for folk festivals in Bavaria remain reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communications networks.
