NIKOS – Volksfest

Emergency announcements for Munich’s Oktoberfest

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Clear warnings despite fairground noise and crowds

At Munich’s Oktoberfest, very high visitor numbers meet narrow paths between rides, festival tents and fairground businesses. The constant background noise makes it difficult to communicate warnings and instructions clearly to all visitors. In a hazardous situation, emergency announcements must be clearly perceived even in crowded conditions and by visitors who speak different languages. At the same time, the mobile network is overloaded by the high density of visitors.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Announcements, system monitoring, crowd management and device control come together with NIKOS in a single platform independent of the public network. NIKOS [audio]² interrupts the fairground operators’ sound systems for the duration of an emergency announcement, thereby reducing the interference noise level. Existing sound systems are also used for announcements. This eliminates the need to install a separate public-address system. As a result, the material, installation and support required are reduced.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS meet the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes, NIKOS is standard-compliant: the system meets DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting — usable both in everyday operation and in an emergency. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the decisive reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets these requirements because it operates independently of an external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at any time. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) do not apply to NIKOS, since they concern a different field of use and functional scope. As a public address system for temporary and mobile deployments, NIKOS has already been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Do emergency announcements remain operational when the mobile network is overloaded?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and independently of public communications networks. The system remains operational if these networks are overloaded or fail. NIKOS communicates by radio and requires no cable runs. Following an interruption, the system automatically re-establishes the connection. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also supplies connected accessory modules. Emergency announcements for Oktoberfest remain operational in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communications networks.
Where does NIKOS offer cost advantages?+
NIKOS combines several functions on a unified communications platform. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. Central announcements, remote control and status monitoring replace control, reporting and operating posts distributed throughout the site. This allows personnel to work at safety-critical locations. At temporary events, costs for planning, installation and operation of the safety technology are reduced.
Can NIKOS be deployed at short notice and flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was developed for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules within just a few minutes on lampposts, stages, stands or trees and configure them for the specific deployment. A Schuko power connection ensures continuous operation. NIKOS uses existing digital radio networks.
