Emergency announcements for the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Crowded festival tents and sound systems make safety announcements difficult to understand

The Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt brings together densely occupied festival tents, fairground attractions and heavily used paths amid persistently high noise levels. In a hazardous situation, emergency announcements must remain clearly understandable to all visitors despite music, ride noise and crowds. This makes directing visitors more difficult. When visitor density is very high, the mobile network can also become overloaded quickly; for this reason, communication channels relying on mobile networks are not sufficiently dependable in a crisis.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, visitor information and control in a single, network-independent platform. NIKOS [dispatcher]² can address individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site; NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission on site via radio and outputs it as an analogue audio signal. NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output at locations without an existing sound system. This means that quickly deployable, radio-based technology can reduce cabling requirements, cable ramps and separate control equipment, thereby lowering costs. Recurring operating and monitoring tasks are controlled centrally and monitored or carried out by NIKOS, reducing staff travel, operator and security posts, as well as the effort required for planning, installation and operation.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS adhere to the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes. The basis is DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems, whose requirements NIKOS fully meets. Developed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting applications, NIKOS is technically designed for everyday use as well as for emergency situations. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based systems — does not depend on an external network, immediate usability is guaranteed at all times, meaning the standard is fully met. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are not relevant for the approval of NIKOS. Since its market launch in 2017, NIKOS has been the leading public address system for temporary and mobile applications, used successfully at some of the largest open-air events in Europe. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt benefit from cost savings?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can provide different functions through a unified communications platform. These savings can quickly offset NIKOS's rental and installation costs. Some specific examples of savings can be found here. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. In addition, staff travel, operator and security posts can be reduced because recurring tasks are controlled centrally and monitored or carried out by NIKOS.
Is NIKOS crisis-resilient for the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable routes but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically restored after an interruption. NIKOS therefore responds far more resiliently to disruptions of normal operations than many other systems and demonstrates the crisis resilience of this communications system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of runtime and also powers connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has pulled the wrong plug, NIKOS continues to operate. This ensures that emergency announcements for the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt remain reliably functional even in the event of a power outage or disruptions to public communication networks.
How can announcements be understood despite sound systems continuing to play?+
NIKOS [audio]² can interrupt the fairground operators' sound systems for the duration of an announcement. This reduces the level of background noise and significantly improves the intelligibility of announcements. If required, existing sound systems can be used for announcements, eliminating the need to set up a separate public address system.
