NIKOS – Freßgassfest

Emergency announcements for the Freßgassfest in Frankfurt

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Warnings must reach open street areas immediately

At the Freßgassfest in Frankfurt, visitors are gathered closely together among restaurants, stalls and adjoining inner-city areas. In the open street environment, an emergency announcement must be quickly understandable without access controls, before crowds build up at bottlenecks, crossings or stops. At the same time, music, conversations, delivery and city traffic, as well as changing visitor locations, make it more difficult to address individual areas selectively.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS brings together announcements, alerting, visitor guidance and device control in a single network-independent platform. At noisy stalls and stages, NIKOS [audio]² improves intelligibility by interrupting the music systems for the duration of an announcement and outputting the voice transmission on site as an analogue audio signal. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire event area; NIKOS [horn]² supplements locations without an existing public address system. Using existing music systems reduces the need for separate announcement sound systems, cabling and operator stations, because recurring tasks are centrally controlled and monitored or carried out by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS meet the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes, NIKOS is standard-compliant: the system meets DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting — usable both in everyday operation and in an emergency. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the decisive reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets these requirements because it operates independently of an external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at any time. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) do not apply to NIKOS, since they concern a different field of use and functional scope. As a public address system for temporary and mobile deployments, NIKOS has already been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where do cost advantages arise when using NIKOS for the Freßgassfest?+
Cost advantages arise primarily from combining multiple functions in a single communication platform. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. Recurring tasks such as central announcements, remote control and status monitoring are handled in one place, allowing staff to be deployed more effectively. Rental and installation costs are also reduced because less separate equipment is required.
Does NIKOS remain operational during power outages or overloaded networks?+
Yes. NIKOS operates over its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. Because NIKOS does not rely on cable routes but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also supplies connected accessory modules. This means that emergency announcements for the Freßgassfest remain reliably operational even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
How does NIKOS make it easier to comply with quiet hours during the Freßgassfest?+
The quiet-hours function in NIKOS [dispatcher]² centrally switches off all connected public address systems at the touch of a button. This facilitates approval by the authorities and helps prevent complaints from local residents.
