NIKOS – Volksfest

Emergency communication system for Oktoberfest in Munich

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Safety announcements must reach crowded beer tents despite the noise

Oktoberfest in Munich brings together very high visitor density, operations inside the beer tents and the loud sound systems used by the showmen. In an emergency, warnings and instructions must reach guests clearly and intelligibly despite noise, crowds and ongoing activities. At the same time, many tents and showmen’s businesses are independently organized, making coordinated alerting and rapid communication in an emergency particularly challenging. When visitor density is high, the mobile network also becomes overloaded quickly and is not reliable enough for safety-critical communication.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

With NIKOS, announcements, system monitoring, visitor information and device control come together on a single platform — fully independent of the public network. For events such as Oktoberfest in Munich, NIKOS consolidates safety-critical communication on a single platform. NIKOS [audio]² can interrupt the showmen’s sound systems for the duration of an announcement. This reduces the ambient noise level and significantly improves the intelligibility of announcements; existing sound systems can be used for announcements, eliminating the need to set up a separate public address system. Centralized operation via NIKOS [dispatcher]², along with visual signaling using NIKOS [flash]², emergency lighting with NIKOS [LED]² and switching via NIKOS [relay]², reduces the need for separate control devices, staff travel and control stations.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Is NIKOS designed to meet the relevant standards for announcements?+
Yes, indeed: NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. The system was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting and is technically designed for both everyday operation and emergency situations. DIN EN 50849 represents the relevant reference framework for ELA systems. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS does not depend on any external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at all times — fully meeting the standard as a result. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to NIKOS, as they are not applicable to radio-based public address systems like NIKOS. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS deliver cost benefits?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can combine various functions on a single communication platform. These savings can quickly offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. You can find some specific examples of potential savings here. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. Recurring tasks are controlled centrally and carried out by NIKOS, reducing staff travel, operating positions and security posts.
Is NIKOS resilient in a crisis?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. Because NIKOS does not rely on cable connections but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically restored after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. This means that emergency communication systems for Oktoberfest remain reliably operational even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed quickly and flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was developed specifically for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules on various structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, within just a few minutes and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation.
