NIKOS – Tag der deutschen Einheit

Emergency communication system for the central German Unity Day celebrations in Hamburg

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Every second counts when protection requirements and visitor density are high

The central German Unity Day celebrations in Hamburg combine a high visitor density with protocol-related protection requirements and high-ranking guests. Stages, activity areas and visitor flows are spread across inner-city areas, making announcements time-critical when there is no shared announcement level. In a hazardous situation, warnings and instructions must reach the affected visitor areas immediately, clearly and in a location-specific manner. At the same time, heavily overloaded public communication networks must be expected when capacity utilization is very high.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

One platform for everything: NIKOS unites visitor information, alerting, crowd management and control in a single, network-independent system. For events such as the central German Unity Day celebrations in Hamburg, NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, information messages, remote control and status monitoring in a single platform. The system ensures the transmission of information even in the event of a power outage or disruptions to public communication networks. NIKOS [dispatcher]² provides a central point for operating announcements, remote controls and status information; NIKOS [audio]² receives voice transmissions on site by radio and outputs them as an analog audio signal. NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output at locations without an existing sound system, NIKOS [LED]² provides emergency lighting, and NIKOS [relay]² switches external devices. Quickly deployable, radio-based units reduce the need for long cable runs, separate control devices and additional operating posts, because recurring tasks are controlled centrally and monitored or executed by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS adhere to the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes. The basis is DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems, whose requirements NIKOS fully meets. Developed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting applications, NIKOS is technically designed for everyday use as well as for emergency situations. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based systems — does not depend on an external network, immediate usability is guaranteed at all times, meaning the standard is fully met. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are not relevant for the approval of NIKOS. Since its market launch in 2017, NIKOS has been the leading public address system for temporary and mobile applications, used successfully at some of the largest open-air events in Europe. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS generate cost savings?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can be used to implement different functions through a single communication platform. These savings can quickly offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. You can find some specific examples of savings here. Consistent use of its wide range of functions often not only increases the level of safety and makes employees' work easier, but also generates savings in the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. In addition, NIKOS can specifically replace personnel: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operating posts distributed across the site can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This allows personnel to be reduced or deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced events: guarding emergency exit gates can be covered by technically monitoring the gates with NIKOS, meaning that guards at emergency exits can be eliminated or deployed more effectively elsewhere. This offsets rental and installation costs through savings in personnel and other technology. Especially for temporary, time-limited events, this significantly reduces the costs of planning, setting up and operating safety technology.
Is NIKOS crisis-proof?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable routes but communicates by radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS is therefore far more resilient to disruptions of normal operations than many other systems, demonstrating the crisis resilience of this communication system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has pulled the wrong plug, NIKOS continues to operate. This means that emergency communication systems for events such as German Unity Day remain reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
How is NIKOS distributed across different event areas such as stages, activity areas and visitor zones?+
NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor use without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within a few minutes on various structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units as required for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site.
