NIKOS – Hafen

Emergency communication system for the Sail Bremerhaven

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Warnings must reliably reach visitors along the quaysides

At the Sail Bremerhaven, visitor flows spread across an extensive maritime site along quaysides, piers, and access routes. In a hazardous situation, warnings and instructions must be issued quickly, clearly, and audibly across the entire site, even at high visitor density near the water. Public networks quickly become overloaded during such peak loads; at the same time, piers and jetties often lack fixed communication and sound infrastructure.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, visitor information, and control in a single, network-independent platform. NIKOS [dispatcher]² centrally controls individual announcement locations, targeted areas, or the entire site. NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission on site via radio and outputs it as an analogue audio signal. NIKOS [horn]² adds output at positions without an existing sound system. Quickly deployable, radio-based units replace long cable runs and separate sub-systems at piers, quaysides, and access points. NIKOS [LED]² provides emergency lighting. This bundling reduces material, installation, and operating effort.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do announcements made with NIKOS comply with the applicable standards?+
Yes. NIKOS fulfils the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). NIKOS is technically designed for safety-relevant announcement and alarm applications and is ready for immediate use. DIN EN 50849 is the relevant reference standard for electroacoustic emergency warning systems (ELA systems). The requirements set out there are fully met by NIKOS, since it does not depend on any external network. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4, and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to the field of application and functional scope of NIKOS and are therefore not relevant for approval. NIKOS is an announcement system for temporary and mobile applications and has been successfully used since 2017 for mission-critical communication tasks. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner are happy to advise you on the many functions of NIKOS and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where do cost benefits arise from using NIKOS?+
With NIKOS, different functions are implemented via a single, unified communication platform. The rental and installation costs of NIKOS are quickly offset by these savings. You can find some concrete examples of savings here. Consistent use of the many functions leads not only to a higher level of safety and reduced workload for staff, but also to savings in the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. In addition, staff can be specifically reduced: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting, or operating posts spread across the site are instead carried out centrally via announcements, remote control, and status monitoring from a single location. This means staff can be saved or deployed more effectively at safety-critical points, offsetting rental and installation costs through savings in personnel and other technology. Especially for temporary, time-limited events, this significantly reduces the costs of planning, setting up, and operating the safety technology.
Is NIKOS crisis-proof?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own self-sufficient radio network, completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Because NIKOS does not rely on cable connections but communicates via radio, the connection re-establishes itself automatically after an interruption. This makes NIKOS significantly more resilient to disruptions in normal operation than many other systems, demonstrating this communication system's crisis readiness. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of runtime and also powers connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider is hacked, or someone pulls the wrong plug, NIKOS keeps working. This means the emergency communication system for the Sail Bremerhaven remains reliably operational even if the power supply fails or public communication networks are disrupted.
How does NIKOS help ensure compliance with night-time quiet hours at the Sail?+
The night-time quiet hours function in NIKOS [dispatcher]² centrally switches off all connected sound systems at the push of a button. This makes official approval easier and helps prevent complaints from local residents.
