NIKOS – Weihnachtsmarkt

Emergency warning system for the Christmas market in Magdeburg

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Warnings reach visitors even when networks are overloaded

At the Christmas market in Magdeburg, an emergency warning system faces particular challenges due to crowds, a noisy environment and visitors who speak different languages. Amid stalls, fairground rides and groups of visitors, warnings and instructions must be clearly understood. The high visitor density can overload mobile networks and restrict mobile-network-based warning channels at the crucial moment. Cold, wet conditions and a possible power failure further increase the demands placed on the safety communication system in use.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, visitor information and control in a single, network-independent platform. In the event of an emergency announcement, NIKOS [audio]² interrupts the exhibitors’ sound systems. This reduces background noise and improves the intelligibility of the announcement, while existing sound systems can be used for announcements, eliminating the need to install a separate public-address system. Central operation via NIKOS [dispatcher]² reduces installation and support effort as well as the need for separate equipment.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do announcements made with NIKOS comply with the applicable standards?+
Yes. NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant public address and alerting applications and is technically designed for use in both everyday and emergency situations. For electroacoustic emergency warning systems, DIN EN 50849 is the relevant reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets the requirements specified therein, as it does not depend on an external network and can therefore be used immediately at any time. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to the field of use and functional scope of NIKOS and are therefore not relevant for approval. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been successfully deployed in numerous mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Is NIKOS resilient in the event of power and network failures?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. Because NIKOS communicates by radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also supplies connected accessory modules. This means that the emergency warning system for the Christmas market remains reliably operational even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be installed at short notice at the Christmas market?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor use without permanent infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules on various structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, within just a few minutes and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power outlet is sufficient for continuous operation.
Where does using NIKOS create cost savings?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can implement a range of different functions via a single communication platform. These savings can quickly offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. You can find some specific examples of savings here. Consistent use of its wide range of functions not only increases the level of safety and makes employees’ work easier, but also reduces the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. In addition, NIKOS can be used to specifically replace personnel: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operator posts distributed across the site can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This enables the operator to reduce staffing levels or deploy personnel more effectively at safety-critical points. Rental and installation costs are therefore offset by savings in personnel and other technology. Especially for temporary, time-limited events, this significantly reduces the costs of planning, setting up and operating the safety technology.
