NIKOS – Basel Tattoo

Evacuation Announcement for the Basel Tattoo

autonomous reliable cost-effective
Challenge

Clear warnings despite music and crowds

At the Basel Tattoo, dense crowds and the high volume of the musical performances make evacuation announcements difficult. Warnings and instructions must reach all visitors clearly so that they can take the correct action immediately. When visitor numbers are high, the mobile network becomes overloaded and is unavailable for safety-critical communication.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

With NIKOS, announcements, system monitoring, visitor information and device control come together on a single platform — fully independent of the public network. NIKOS [audio]² interrupts music playback during an evacuation announcement, thereby reducing the background noise level. Existing sound systems transmit the announcement. Separate announcement speakers, additional cabling and the associated installation costs are no longer required.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS meet the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes, NIKOS is standard-compliant: the system meets DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting — usable both in everyday operation and in an emergency. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the decisive reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets these requirements because it operates independently of an external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at any time. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) do not apply to NIKOS, since they concern a different field of use and functional scope. As a public address system for temporary and mobile deployments, NIKOS has already been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will advise you on NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Is NIKOS crisis-resilient?+
Yes, NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and independently of public communication networks and their availability. The system is resilient to external influences. As NIKOS does not rely on cable connections but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS responds resiliently to disruptions in normal operations and remains ready for use. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. NIKOS continues to operate even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider fails or the power supply is interrupted. This ensures that evacuation announcements for the Basel Tattoo remain functional even when public communication networks are disrupted.
Can NIKOS be deployed at short notice and flexibly?+
Yes, NIKOS was developed for flexible outdoor operations without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules on lamp posts, stages, trees, stalls or decorations within a few minutes and configure them for the specific deployment. A standard Schuko power outlet ensures continuous operation. NIKOS uses existing digital radio networks.
How can evacuation announcements be triggered selectively?+
NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units at individual announcement locations, in selected areas or across the entire event site. Depending on the situation, evacuation announcements can be triggered in the affected areas or simultaneously for the entire Basel Tattoo.
