During Sail Amsterdam 2030, evacuation announcements present a particular challenge due to large crowds, a noisy environment and international visitors. Are announcements made via NIKOS standard-compliant?+
Yes — NIKOS fully meets DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). The system was designed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting tasks, technically built for everyday operation as well as for emergencies. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 sets out the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based solutions — does not depend on any external network, it is always immediately usable and fully meets the requirements set out in the standard. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 or DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are therefore not relevant for NIKOS in terms of approval. Since 2017, NIKOS has been used successfully many times as a public address system for temporary and mobile applications in mission-critical communication tasks. Acceptance by the relevant authorities is assessed on a project-by-project basis.
Does NIKOS continue to function if the mobile network is overloaded or there is a power failure?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. Because NIKOS communicates by radio and does not rely on cable connections, the connection is restored automatically after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also powers connected accessory modules. This means that evacuation announcements for Sail Amsterdam 2030 continue to function reliably even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be installed at short notice without permanent infrastructure?+
Yes. NIKOS was developed for flexible outdoor use without permanent infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules within a few minutes on a range of structures such as street lamps, stages, trees, stalls or decorations and configure them to suit the situation. For continuous operation, a standard Schuko power connection is sufficient. NIKOS uses an existing digital radio network where one is available.
Can evacuation announcements be sent to specific areas?+
Yes. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the public-address units for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire event site. This allows instructions to be adapted to the current situation without every part of the site receiving the same announcement.
