NIKOS – Sportevent

Evacuation announcements for city runs in Dortmund

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

coordinated clearance of start, finish and route areas

At city runs in Dortmund, the start, finish, route marshals, closures and spectator areas are spread across long stretches of road. Evacuation announcements must reach the affected areas quickly and selectively to avoid unnecessarily impacting sections that are not involved. Coordination is further complicated by large visitor numbers, loud ambient noise and short-term changes along the course. In an emergency, every second counts to deliver clear instructions to the right areas.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

For events such as city runs in Dortmund, NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, information messages, remote control and status monitoring in one platform. The system ensures delivery of information even in the event of power failures or disruptions to public communication networks. NIKOS [audio]² receives voice transmission by radio on site and outputs it as an analogue audio signal; NIKOS [horn]² adds acoustic output at positions without an existing sound system. Central operation via NIKOS [dispatcher]² brings all safety-relevant functions together in a clear system architecture. This eliminates the need for separate loudspeaker, control and communication systems for evacuation announcements, visitor information and system control. It reduces material requirements, installation effort and staff travel because recurring tasks are centrally controlled and monitored or executed by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do evacuation announcements with NIKOS meet the requirements of DIN EN 50849?+
Yes. NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). NIKOS was specifically developed for safety-relevant announcement and alerting applications and is technically designed for everyday and emergency use. For electroacoustic emergency warning systems (ELA systems), DIN EN 50849 is the relevant standard. Unlike mobile-based systems, NIKOS fully complies with these requirements as it is not dependent on any third-party network and can be used at any time. Other standards commonly known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4, or DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to the scope and functions of NIKOS and are therefore not relevant for approval. NIKOS is an announcement system for temporary and mobile applications and has been used successfully for mission-critical communications tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the various functions of NIKOS and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
How are individual route sections cleared in a targeted way?+
Via NIKOS [dispatcher]², the operations team selects individual announcement locations, targeted areas or the entire event area and starts the appropriate announcement at the push of a button. This ensures that only the areas where visitors are to be guided receive specific instructions.
How does using NIKOS result in cost savings?+
With NIKOS, different functions can be implemented on a single communication platform depending on the application. The rental and installation costs of NIKOS can be quickly offset by these savings. When the wide range of functions is used consistently, the result is not only an increase in safety and easier workflows for staff, but often overall budget savings as well. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. In addition, NIKOS can be used to replace staff in a targeted manner: tasks that would otherwise require several supervisors, messengers or operators across the site are handled by centralized announcements, remote control and status monitoring from a single point – so staff can be saved or deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest saving potential is realized at fenced-off events: NIKOS can provide technical monitoring of emergency exits, eliminating or reallocating security posts at these exits. This means rental and installation costs are offset by savings on staff and other equipment. Especially at temporary, time-limited events, this significantly reduces the costs for planning, setting up and operating the safety technology.
How long do the announcement units operate without external power?+
NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also supplies connected accessory modules. So evacuation announcements for city runs remain reliably operational even in the event of power failures or disruptions to public communication networks.
