NIKOS – Festival

Evacuation Announcements for Festivals in Berlin

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Warn and guide visitors across the entire site during severe weather or incidents

At festivals in Berlin, evacuation announcements present a particular challenge due to crowds, high noise levels and visitors who speak different languages. Despite the noise and congestion, an evacuation announcement must be clearly understood even away from the stage areas so that visitor flows do not move against one another. At the same time, public mobile networks are vulnerable to overload when heavily used, while temporary power and data infrastructure is not available everywhere on the site. In the event of severe weather, overcrowding or an incident, there is very little time to warn and guide people across the entire area in an orderly manner.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

One platform for everything: NIKOS unites visitor information, alerting, crowd management and control in a single, network-independent system. NIKOS [dispatcher]² can be used to control individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site. NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission on site via radio and outputs it as an analogue audio signal to existing PA systems. NIKOS [horn]² supplements positions without an existing sound system, while NIKOS [LED]² provides emergency lighting and NIKOS [relay]² switches external devices. This reduces the need for separate speaker lines, control devices and operator stations, as recurring tasks are centrally controlled and monitored or carried out by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Are announcements made via NIKOS standard-compliant?+
Yes — NIKOS fully meets DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). The system was designed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting tasks, technically built for everyday operation as well as for emergencies. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 sets out the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based solutions — does not depend on any external network, it is always immediately usable and fully meets the requirements set out in the standard. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 or DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are therefore not relevant for NIKOS in terms of approval. Since 2017, NIKOS has been used successfully many times a public address system for temporary and mobile applications in mission-critical communication tasks. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where do festivals benefit from cost savings?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can implement various functions via a single communications platform. These savings can quickly offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. You can find some specific examples of savings here. Separate speaker, control and communications solutions are no longer required for evacuation announcements and other safety-critical coordination tasks. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced events such as festivals: Monitoring emergency exit gates can be handled technically with NIKOS, eliminating security posts at emergency exits or allowing them to be deployed more effectively elsewhere.
Is NIKOS resilient in the event of network overloads and power failures?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communications networks and their availability. Because NIKOS does not rely on cable connections but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. This means evacuation announcements at festivals remain reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communications networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed at temporary festival sites at short notice?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor use without permanent infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within a few minutes on a range of structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. NIKOS does not use an existing digital radio network; communication takes place via the independent NIKOS radio network.
