Evacuation announcements for open-air concerts

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Warnings must remain immediately intelligible despite stage noise

At an open-air concert, high stage sound levels, densely packed crowds and changing ambient noise come together. In an evacuation situation, it is crucial that clear instructions reach the audience quickly and reliably without being drowned out by music, cheering or traffic noise. This requires an announcement system that enables everyone present to orient themselves safely despite noise and changing acoustic conditions.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, visitor information and control in a single, network-independent platform. For events such as open-air concerts, NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, information messages, remote control and status monitoring in one platform. The system ensures that information can still be transmitted in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls announcement units for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site; NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission on site via radio and outputs it as an analogue audio signal. Existing PA systems can be integrated into the solution, while NIKOS [horn]² adds coverage at locations without an existing sound system. This reduces the need for separate speaker lines, long cable runs and additional control devices.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do announcements made with NIKOS comply with the applicable standards?+
Yes. NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant public address and alerting applications and is technically designed for use in both everyday and emergency situations. For electroacoustic emergency warning systems, DIN EN 50849 is the relevant reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets the requirements specified therein, as it does not depend on an external network and can therefore be used immediately at any time. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to the field of use and functional scope of NIKOS and are therefore not relevant for approval. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been successfully deployed in numerous mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS deliver cost savings?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can combine various functions on a single communications platform. These savings can quickly offset NIKOS’s rental and installation costs. You can find some specific examples of savings here. When its wide range of functions is used consistently, NIKOS often not only increases the level of safety and makes employees’ work easier, but also reduces the overall budget. Evacuation announcements and other safety-critical coordination tasks no longer require separate speaker, control and communications solutions—NIKOS combines employee alerting, visitor information and system control in one platform. This reduces material requirements, cabling work and the risk of tripping over cable ramps. NIKOS can also specifically replace personnel: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operating posts distributed across the site can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This allows personnel to be saved or deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced events, such as festivals and corporate events: monitoring emergency exit gates technically with NIKOS can cover the security of these gates, eliminating security posts at emergency exits or allowing them to be deployed more effectively elsewhere. In this way, rental and installation costs are offset by savings in personnel and other technology. This significantly reduces the costs of planning, setup and operation of safety technology, particularly for temporary, time-limited events.
Is NIKOS independent of mobile networks and the internet at an open-air concert?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and does not depend on public communication networks. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also powers connected accessory modules. This means that evacuation announcements at an open-air concert remain reliably operational even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
How quickly can NIKOS be installed across a concert site?+
NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor use without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules on various structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, within just a few minutes and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power outlet is sufficient for continuous operation.
