Evacuation at Open-Air Concerts in Hamburg

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Clear evacuation announcements despite stage noise

Open-air concerts in Hamburg bring together high stage sound levels, densely packed crowds and temporarily installed infrastructure. In an evacuation, warnings and instructions must be communicated clearly and immediately across the entire site, even if public communication networks are disrupted or the power supply fails. Heavy background noise and tightly packed crowds create a risk that important announcements will go unheard. Conventional communication systems often reach their limits in these situations.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Announcements, system monitoring, crowd management and device control come together with NIKOS in a single platform independent of the public network. For events such as open-air concerts in Hamburg, NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, information messages, remote control and status monitoring in one platform. The system ensures that information can still be communicated in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks. NIKOS [audio]² receives voice transmissions wirelessly on site and outputs them as an analogue audio signal; NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output wherever no PA system is available. NIKOS [dispatcher]² can be used to control individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site, significantly reducing the need for equipment, cabling and operating and security posts.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do NIKOS announcements meet the relevant standard requirements?+
Yes, NIKOS fully meets DIN EN 50849 "Electroacoustic Emergency Warning Systems". The system was specifically designed for safety-relevant announcements and alerting and is technically built for both everyday and emergency use. DIN EN 50849 is the relevant standard for radio-based ELA systems such as NIKOS. Because NIKOS, unlike mobile network-based systems, operates independently of an external network, immediate usability is guaranteed at all times — fully meeting the standard's requirements as a result. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), by contrast, do not apply to NIKOS, as they concern a different field of use and functional scope and are therefore not relevant to NIKOS's deployment. As the only public address system for temporary and mobile applications consistently designed around the demands of mission-critical use, NIKOS has been used successfully for crisis-proof communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS deliver cost savings?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can provide a range of functions through a unified communication platform. These savings can quickly offset NIKOS rental and installation costs. You can find some specific examples of savings here. Consistent use of its wide range of functions often not only increases the level of safety and makes employees’ work easier, but can also reduce the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. This reduces the need for equipment and cabling, as well as the risk of tripping over cable ramps. NIKOS can also replace personnel in specific areas: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operating posts distributed across the site can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This allows staff to be reduced or deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced events: monitoring emergency exit gates technically with NIKOS can replace the need to guard them, allowing security posts at emergency exits to be eliminated or deployed more effectively elsewhere. This means that rental and installation costs are offset by savings in personnel and other technology. Particularly for temporary, time-limited events, this significantly reduces the costs of planning, setup and operation of the safety technology.
Does NIKOS remain operational in the event of a network or power failure?+
Yes. NIKOS operates over its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable connections but communicates by radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS therefore responds far more resiliently to disruptions to normal operations than many other systems, demonstrating the crisis-proof capabilities of this communication system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also supplies connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has pulled the wrong plug, NIKOS continues to operate. This ensures that evacuations at open-air concerts remain reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed quickly and flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor use without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within a few minutes on various structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. NIKOS can make use of an existing digital radio network.
