Evacuation at EXPO 2027 Belgrade

autonomous reliable cost-effective
Challenge

Clear instructions without public networks

At EXPO 2027 Belgrade, an evacuation presents particular challenges due to crowding, high noise levels and visitors who speak different languages. Instructions must reach all areas simultaneously and be easy to understand so that visitors use the designated routes. In the event of heavy network traffic or a power outage, mobile communications cannot be relied upon.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Instead of multiple separate solutions: NIKOS unites visitor information, system monitoring, visitor guidance and control in a single network-independent platform. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire event site. The wireless installation reduces cabling requirements as well as the need for separate control devices and specialist personnel to set up different subsystems.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS adhere to the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes. The basis is DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems, whose requirements NIKOS fully meets. Developed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting applications, NIKOS is technically designed for everyday use as well as for emergency situations. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based systems — does not depend on an external network, immediate usability is guaranteed at all times, meaning the standard is fully met. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are not relevant for the approval of NIKOS. Since its market launch in 2017, NIKOS has been the leading public address system for temporary and mobile applications, used successfully at some of the largest open-air events in Europe. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on NIKOS's wide range of functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Is NIKOS crisis-resilient?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous wireless network and is completely independent of public communications networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Because NIKOS does not rely on wired connections but communicates wirelessly, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS is therefore much more resilient to disruptions of normal operations than many other systems, demonstrating the crisis resilience of this communications system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has unplugged the wrong cable, NIKOS continues to operate. This means that evacuation announcements for EXPO 2027 Belgrade remain reliably functional even in the event of a power outage or disruptions to public communications networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed quickly and flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor applications without permanent infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules on a variety of structures, such as street lamps, stages, trees, stalls or decorations, within just a few minutes and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. NIKOS can be integrated into an existing digital wireless network.
Where does using NIKOS deliver cost benefits?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can implement various functions through a single communications platform. The savings generated in this way can quickly offset NIKOS's rental and installation costs. You can find some specific examples of savings here. Consistent use of its wide range of functions often not only increases the level of safety and makes work easier for employees, but also leads to savings in the overall budget. For evacuations and other safety-critical coordination tasks, separate loudspeaker, control and communications solutions are no longer required — NIKOS combines employee alerts, visitor information and system control in a single platform. This reduces material requirements, cabling work and the risk of tripping over cable ramps. In addition, NIKOS can be used to replace personnel in a targeted manner: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operating posts distributed across the site can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This allows personnel to be reduced or deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced events: Emergency exit gates can be monitored technically with NIKOS, eliminating security posts at emergency exits or allowing them to be deployed more effectively elsewhere. This offsets rental and installation costs through savings in personnel and other technology. Especially at temporary, time-limited events, this significantly reduces the costs of planning, installation and operation of the safety technology.
