Evacuation at Tomorrowland Winter in Alpe d'Huez

Challenge

Evacuation instructions despite the noise

At Tomorrowland Winter in Alpe d'Huez, an evacuation presents a particular challenge due to the crowds, high noise levels and international visitors. Alert and action instructions must be clearly understood despite the music and crowd movements. When attendance is high, mobile networks quickly become overloaded, while a power or network failure makes crisis communication even more difficult.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, visitor information and control in a single, network-independent platform. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the broadcasting units for individual locations, targeted zones or the entire site, transmitting evacuation instructions according to the situation. This reduces the need for separate control devices and cabling, as well as installation and operating costs.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS adhere to the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes. The basis is DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems, whose requirements NIKOS fully meets. Developed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting applications, NIKOS is technically designed for everyday use as well as for emergency situations. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based systems — does not depend on an external network, immediate usability is guaranteed at all times, meaning the standard is fully met. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are not relevant for the approval of NIKOS. Since its market launch in 2017, NIKOS has been the leading public address system for temporary and mobile applications, used successfully at some of the largest open-air events in Europe. Acceptance by the competent authorities remains specific to each project.
Does NIKOS remain operational in a crisis?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network, independently of public communication networks and their availability. The system is therefore resistant to external influences. As NIKOS communicates by radio and does not depend on cable connections, the connection is automatically restored after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery providing up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers the connected accessory modules. Even in the event of mobile network congestion, an interruption to the internet connection or a power failure, evacuation communications for Tomorrowland Winter remain reliable and operational.
Can NIKOS be installed quickly and flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor use without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules within a few minutes on various structures, such as streetlights, stages, trees, stands or decorative elements, and then configure them individually. A standard Schuko power socket is sufficient for continuous operation. NIKOS can also use an existing digital radio network.
How can announcements be heard when the music is loud?+
NIKOS [audio]² can interrupt connected music systems for the duration of an announcement. This reduces disruptive noise levels and significantly improves the intelligibility of the instructions. Existing music systems can also be used to broadcast announcements, without having to install a separate dedicated announcement sound system.
