NIKOS – Sportevent

Mobile public address system for city runs in Hamburg

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Clear announcements along long urban routes

City runs in Hamburg follow long, narrow routes through public spaces while incorporating start, finish and spectator areas. Announcements must be clearly intelligible at geographically separated points, even though fixed public address systems are not continuously available along the route. Road closures and area access permissions change at short notice during the run; route marshals, medical teams and security personnel therefore need clear information available immediately. At the same time, the mobile network is not suitable as the sole means of communication when participant and spectator numbers are high.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Instead of multiple separate solutions: NIKOS unites visitor information, system monitoring, visitor guidance and control in a single network-independent platform. Along the route, quickly deployable radio-based units replace long cable runs and additional mobile loudspeaker lines. Existing public address systems at the start and finish are connected via NIKOS [audio]², while NIKOS [horn]² adds coverage at locations without an existing public address system. This reduces the need for materials, cabling work and decentralized operator stations, because recurring announcements and control tasks are managed centrally and monitored or carried out by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do announcements made with NIKOS comply with the applicable standards?+
Yes. NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant public address and alerting applications and is technically designed for use in both everyday and emergency situations. For electroacoustic emergency warning systems, DIN EN 50849 is the relevant reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets the requirements specified therein, as it does not depend on an external network and can therefore be used immediately at any time. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to the field of use and functional scope of NIKOS and are therefore not relevant for approval. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been successfully deployed in numerous mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS provide cost benefits?+
For temporary deployments, NIKOS reduces the need for separate equipment and additional personnel. Instead of maintaining several standalone systems for announcements, alarm notifications and control, a single shared platform is used. This reduces material requirements, transport effort and installation time. Since announcements and operating tasks are handled centrally, fewer remotely staffed stations are also required. This is particularly beneficial economically for time-limited events with changing requirements.
Is NIKOS resilient in a crisis?+
NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable runs but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS therefore responds far more resiliently to disruptions in normal operations than many other systems and demonstrates the crisis resilience of this communication system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also supplies connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has unplugged the wrong cable, NIKOS continues to operate. This ensures that mobile public address systems for city runs remain reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed quickly and flexibly?+
NIKOS was developed specifically for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount and individually configure the modules on various structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees within just a few minutes. A standard Schuko power outlet is sufficient for continuous operation. Under certain circumstances, NIKOS can also use an existing digital radio network.
