Mobile Public Address System for Wacken Open Air

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Clear announcements across the entire site despite stage noise

Wacken Open Air brings together large crowds, loud stage areas and heavily used paths within a temporarily established event infrastructure. In an emergency, warnings and instructions must remain quick and easy to understand despite stage noise, crowd noise and changing weather conditions. At the same time, public mobile networks are not suitable as the sole basis for safety-critical announcements when network capacity is heavily utilised.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

One platform for everything: NIKOS unites visitor information, alerting, crowd management and control in a single, network-independent system. For events such as Wacken Open Air, NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, information messages, remote control and status monitoring in a single platform. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units as required for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site; NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission on site via radio and outputs it as an analogue audio signal, while NIKOS [horn]² adds coverage in locations without an existing public address system. This reduces the need for separate public address equipment, long cable runs and additional control points. Staffing requirements, operating routes and security posts are reduced because recurring tasks are controlled centrally and monitored or carried out by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do announcements made with NIKOS comply with the applicable standards?+
Yes. NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant public address and alerting applications and is technically designed for use in both everyday and emergency situations. For electroacoustic emergency warning systems, DIN EN 50849 is the relevant reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets the requirements specified therein, as it does not depend on an external network and can therefore be used immediately at any time. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to the field of use and functional scope of NIKOS and are therefore not relevant for approval. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been successfully deployed in numerous mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does using NIKOS create cost advantages?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS implements different functions through a unified communication platform. The rental and installation costs of NIKOS are quickly amortised through these savings. You can find specific examples of savings here. Using its extensive range of functions increases the level of safety, makes employees' work easier and reduces the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. In addition, NIKOS specifically replaces personnel: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operating posts distributed across the site are handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This reduces staffing requirements and allows available personnel to be deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced events, such as festivals and corporate events: NIKOS covers the guarding of emergency exit gates through technical gate monitoring. As a result, security posts at emergency exits can be eliminated or deployed more effectively elsewhere. Rental and installation costs are therefore offset by savings in personnel and other technology. This significantly reduces the costs of planning, installation and operation of safety technology, especially at temporary events with a limited duration.
Is NIKOS resilient in a crisis?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not depend on cable routes but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS is therefore much more resilient to disruptions of normal operations than many other systems, demonstrating the crisis resilience of this communication system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has pulled out the wrong plug, NIKOS continues to operate. This ensures that the mobile public address system for Wacken Open Air remains reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed quickly and flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was developed specifically for flexible outdoor deployments without permanent infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules within a few minutes on a range of structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. NIKOS [flash]² enhances visual signalling in situations where a flashing signal clearly supports the announcement on site.
