NIKOS – Weihnachtsmarkt

Perimeter protection for the Christmas market in Bremen

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Immediate automatic alarm activation when access barriers and fences are breached

At the Christmas market in Bremen, access barriers, lines of bollards and temporary fences must be monitored reliably over several weeks. In the event of a breach or the unauthorised opening of a secured access point, the immediate automatic alarm must be perceptible throughout the entire site. Frost, damp weather and changing visitor flows make continuous technical operation more challenging. At the same time, the security concept of a Christmas market is subject to particular public scrutiny, making clear responsibilities and short response times crucial.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, visitor information and control in a single, network-independent platform. For events such as the Christmas market in Bremen, NIKOS combines announcements, alarm activation, information messages, remote control and status monitoring in one platform. Quickly deployable, radio-based units integrate access barriers, temporary gates and adjacent security points into a shared alarm and announcement chain. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site; NIKOS [relay]² switches external devices, while NIKOS [LED]² supplements emergency lighting. The radio-based architecture reduces material, installation and operating effort as well as the need for long cable runs. Recurring tasks are controlled centrally and monitored or executed by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do announcements made with NIKOS comply with the applicable standards?+
Yes. NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant public address and alerting applications and is technically designed for use in both everyday and emergency situations. For electroacoustic emergency warning systems, DIN EN 50849 is the relevant reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets the requirements specified therein, as it does not depend on an external network and can therefore be used immediately at any time. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to the field of use and functional scope of NIKOS and are therefore not relevant for approval. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been successfully deployed in numerous mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS provide cost benefits?+
NIKOS enables different functions to be implemented via a single, standardised communication platform. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. For perimeter protection and other safety-critical coordination tasks, combining staff alarm activation, visitor information and system control reduces the need for additional technology. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced events such as the Christmas market in Bremen: Technical monitoring of access and emergency-exit gates can replace security guards at these points or enable their deployment to be more targeted. This reduces rental, installation, personnel and operating costs, particularly at temporary events with a limited duration.
Does NIKOS also work during a power outage or when the mobile network is overloaded?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own self-contained radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable runs but communicates by radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also supplies connected accessory modules. NIKOS continues to operate even if the mobile network is overloaded, the power supply fails or public communication networks are disrupted. This keeps perimeter protection for the Christmas market reliably operational.
How is NIKOS installed at a Christmas market without fixed infrastructure?+
NIKOS was developed specifically for flexible outdoor applications without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within just a few minutes on a range of structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. The internal battery backup keeps safety-critical functions operational during interruptions.
