NIKOS – Jahrmarkt

Severe weather warnings for the Augsburg Plärrer

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Announcements must remain intelligible despite ride noise and crowds

At the Augsburg Plärrer, severe weather warnings compete with the dense soundscape created by rides, stalls and amusement operators’ sound systems. In the crowds, ensuring that safety announcements reach all visitors quickly and clearly is a challenge. In addition, the mobile network is often severely overloaded when visitor numbers are high, meaning that mobile-based warning systems may not function reliably in an emergency.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Instead of multiple separate solutions: NIKOS unites visitor information, system monitoring, visitor guidance and control in a single network-independent platform. For events such as the Augsburg Plärrer, NIKOS combines announcements, alerting and information messages in one platform. NIKOS [audio]², NIKOS [dispatcher]², NIKOS [horn]² and NIKOS [flash]² are centrally integrated and support the transmission of information even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks. NIKOS [audio]² receives voice transmissions by radio on site, outputs them as an analogue audio signal and interrupts the amusement operators’ sound systems for the duration of the announcement. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site. NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output at positions without an existing sound system, NIKOS [flash]² provides visual signals and NIKOS [LED]² supplies emergency lighting. By combining several control and monitoring functions in one platform, the amount of equipment, cabling and operating work is reduced. Staff travel, operating stations and guard posts are reduced because recurring tasks are controlled centrally and monitored or carried out by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do announcements made with NIKOS comply with the applicable standards?+
Yes. NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant public address and alerting applications and is technically designed for use in both everyday and emergency situations. For electroacoustic emergency warning systems, DIN EN 50849 is the relevant reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets the requirements specified therein, as it does not depend on an external network and can therefore be used immediately at any time. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to the field of use and functional scope of NIKOS and are therefore not relevant for approval. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been successfully deployed in numerous mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does using NIKOS deliver cost benefits?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can provide various functions via a single, standardised communications platform. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. This reduces the need for equipment and cabling, as well as the risk of people tripping over cable ramps. In addition, NIKOS can be used to specifically replace personnel: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operating posts distributed across the site can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This can reduce staffing requirements or allow personnel to be deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced-in events: monitoring emergency exit gates technically with NIKOS can replace their physical guarding, meaning that guard posts at emergency exits can be eliminated or deployed more effectively elsewhere. This offsets rental and installation costs through savings on personnel and other technology.
Does severe weather warning functionality also work when the mobile network is overloaded?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own independent radio network and is completely separate from public communication networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable routes but communicates by radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS therefore responds much more resiliently to disruptions in normal operations than many other systems, demonstrating the crisis resilience of this communications system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also powers connected accessory modules. NIKOS continues to function even when the mobile network is overloaded. This ensures that severe weather warnings at open-air concerts remain reliably operational even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
How quickly can NIKOS be installed at the Plärrer?+
NIKOS was developed specifically for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted and individually configured by one or two people within just a few minutes on various structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. Under certain circumstances, NIKOS can also use an existing digital radio network.
