NIKOS – CHIO Aachen – Pferdesport

Spectator information for CHIO Aachen

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Clear announcements despite crowds and ongoing sporting events

At CHIO Aachen, fixed programme schedules, crowded spectator areas and ongoing sporting events come together. Service announcements, visitor guidance and safety-related announcements must reach different areas clearly so that information is not delayed or contradictory. When crowds are large, public mobile networks quickly become congested; for critical information, they are not a reliable transmission channel.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Announcements, system monitoring, crowd management and device control come together with NIKOS in a single platform independent of the public network. For events such as CHIO Aachen, NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, information announcements, remote control and approved solution activation on a single platform. The system ensures that information can still be transmitted in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communications networks. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units as required for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site. By combining several control and monitoring functions on a single platform, the need for separate loudspeaker systems, dedicated control devices and specialist personnel to install and maintain different subsystems is reduced. Centralised operation via NIKOS [dispatcher]², visual signalling with the NIKOS [flash]² flashing light, emergency lighting with the NIKOS [LED]² LED spotlight and the switching of external devices via NIKOS [relay]² enable higher safety standards and expanded functionality while potentially reducing total costs. Under certain circumstances, NIKOS can also use an existing digital radio network.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS meet the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes, NIKOS is standard-compliant: the system meets DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting — usable both in everyday operation and in an emergency. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the decisive reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets these requirements because it operates independently of an external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at any time. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) do not apply to NIKOS, since they concern a different field of use and functional scope. As a public address system for temporary and mobile deployments, NIKOS has already been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where do cost benefits arise when using NIKOS?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can be used to implement a range of different functions via a unified communications platform. These savings can quickly offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. You can find some specific examples of savings here. Consistent use of its wide range of functions often delivers not only a higher level of safety and easier working conditions for employees, but also savings in the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. In addition, NIKOS can be used to replace personnel in a targeted manner: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operating posts distributed across the site can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This can reduce staffing requirements or allow personnel to be deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest savings potential exists at fenced events, such as festivals and corporate events: guarding emergency exit gates can be replaced by technical monitoring of the gates with NIKOS, eliminating security posts at emergency exits or allowing them to be deployed more effectively elsewhere. This means that rental and installation costs are offset by savings in personnel and other technology. Particularly for temporary, time-limited events, this significantly reduces the costs of planning, installation and operation of safety technology. These are generalisable savings stated without reference to a specific location; the benefit is similar at other locations, and the savings in personnel and other technology relate to comparable project requirements.
Does spectator information remain functional at CHIO Aachen in the event of a network failure?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communications networks and their availability. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable connections but communicates by radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also supplies connected accessory modules with power. This ensures that spectator information for CHIO Aachen remains reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communications networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed at short notice and flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor applications without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within a few minutes on various structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. Where the technical specifications permit, NIKOS can also use an existing digital radio network.
