NIKOS – Tag der deutschen Einheit

Terror warning at the central Day of German Unity celebrations in Dresden

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Every second counts for announcements and crowd guidance

The central Day of German Unity celebrations in Dresden bring together high visitor density, prestigious programme events and high-ranking guests in publicly accessible areas of the city centre. A terror warning requires immediately comprehensible announcements, even though stages, security zones and visitor flows are not concentrated in one location. Since stages, visitor areas and main routes are distributed throughout the city centre, there is no single way to address all relevant areas. At the same time, location-specific information must remain possible so that visitors are not directed into opposing flows.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

With NIKOS, announcements, system monitoring, visitor information and device control come together on a single platform — fully independent of the public network. In the event of a terror warning, warning and crowd-guidance announcements are triggered via NIKOS [dispatcher]² for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site. NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission on site by radio and outputs it as an analogue audio signal to existing public address systems, while NIKOS [horn]² provides coverage in locations without an existing public address system. Quickly deployable, radio-based units reduce long cable runs, separate control devices and operator posts because recurring tasks are centrally controlled and monitored or carried out by NIKOS. This reduces material, installation and operating costs, while safety-critical announcements and visitor information are controlled from a single operating level.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Is NIKOS designed to meet the relevant standards for announcements?+
Yes, indeed: NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. The system was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting and is technically designed for both everyday operation and emergency situations. DIN EN 50849 represents the relevant reference framework for ELA systems. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS does not depend on any external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at all times — fully meeting the standard as a result. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to NIKOS, as they are not applicable to radio-based public address systems like NIKOS. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS deliver cost benefits?+
NIKOS combines warning, visitor information and system control on a single platform. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. Additional cost benefits arise because central announcements, remote control and status monitoring take over tasks that would otherwise require several operator and reporting posts distributed across the event site. This makes it possible to significantly reduce personnel, material and installation costs.
Is NIKOS resilient in a crisis?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is independent of public communication networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable connections but communicates by radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS therefore responds significantly more resiliently to disruptions of normal operations than many other systems and has proven itself as a crisis-ready communication system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. The system remains operational even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider experiences an outage or the power supply is interrupted. This ensures that warning and crowd-guidance announcements for the central Day of German Unity celebrations remain reliably available even in the event of disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed at short notice and used flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor operations without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted and individually configured by one or two people within just a few minutes on a range of structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. If required, NIKOS can use an existing digital radio network (DMR).
