NIKOS – Weihnachtsmarkt

Terror Warning for the Christmas Market in Lübeck

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Delivering clear warnings despite crowds and noise

At the Christmas market in Lübeck, a terror warning presents particular challenges due to crowds, a noisy environment and visitors speaking different languages. Amid the stalls and groups of visitors, warnings and instructions must be understood quickly and unambiguously. The market noise can drown out important announcements. At the same time, the mobile network becomes overloaded when visitor numbers are high, making mobile-network-based systems unsuitable for emergencies.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

One platform for everything: NIKOS unites visitor information, alerting, crowd management and control in a single, network-independent system. NIKOS [audio]² interrupts connected music systems for the duration of an announcement and reduces background noise. NIKOS uses existing music systems for announcements, eliminating the need to install a separate public address system. This reduces the materials and installation work required for the Christmas market in Lübeck.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS adhere to the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes. The basis is DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems, whose requirements NIKOS fully meets. Developed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting applications, NIKOS is technically designed for everyday use as well as for emergency situations. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based systems — does not depend on an external network, immediate usability is guaranteed at all times, meaning the standard is fully met. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are not relevant for the approval of NIKOS. Since its market launch in 2017, NIKOS has been the leading public address system for temporary and mobile applications, used successfully at some of the largest open-air events in Europe. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Is NIKOS crisis-proof?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. The system is resistant to external influences. NIKOS communicates wirelessly rather than via cables and automatically re-establishes the connection after an interruption. This enables NIKOS to respond resiliently to disruptions in normal operations. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also supplies connected accessory modules. NIKOS continues to function even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider fails or the power supply is interrupted. This means that terror warnings at the Christmas market remain reliably operational in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed quickly and flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was developed for flexible outdoor deployments without permanent infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules on lampposts, stages, stands or trees within just a few minutes and configure them for the specific application. For continuous operation, a standard Schuko power outlet is sufficient.
Where does using NIKOS provide cost benefits?+
NIKOS combines different functions on a single communications platform, reducing rental and installation costs. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. Central announcements, remote control and status monitoring replace decentralized security, reporting and operating posts. This either reduces staffing requirements or allows personnel to be deployed at safety-critical points. At fenced events, NIKOS technically monitors emergency exit gates. Security personnel stationed at emergency exits can be eliminated or assigned other safety-critical tasks. NIKOS therefore reduces the costs of planning, setting up and operating safety technology at temporary events.
