NIKOS – CSD

Visitor guidance for Christopher Street Day in Berlin

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Guide changing hotspots along the route

At Christopher Street Day in Berlin, the parade, vehicles and crowds move along a long inner-city route, causing bottlenecks and hotspots to shift as the event progresses. In dense crowds, warnings, closures and changes of direction must be communicated quickly and clearly, without individual sections receiving contradictory information. At the same time, the vehicles’ mobile PA systems operate independently, while the mobile network is under heavy strain when visitor density is high.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Instead of multiple separate solutions: NIKOS unites visitor information, system monitoring, visitor guidance and control in a single network-independent platform. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls individual announcement locations, predefined areas or the entire event. NIKOS [audio]² receives voice transmissions wirelessly on site and outputs them as an analog audio signal through the vehicles’ mobile PA systems; NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output at locations without an existing PA system. This eliminates the need for separate announcement channels for vehicles, stationary points and visitor areas, while reducing staff travel, operating and monitoring posts because recurring tasks are controlled centrally and monitored or carried out by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do NIKOS announcements meet the relevant standard requirements?+
Yes, NIKOS fully meets DIN EN 50849 "Electroacoustic Emergency Warning Systems". The system was specifically designed for safety-relevant announcements and alerting and is technically built for both everyday and emergency use. DIN EN 50849 is the relevant standard for radio-based ELA systems such as NIKOS. Because NIKOS, unlike mobile network-based systems, operates independently of an external network, immediate usability is guaranteed at all times — fully meeting the standard's requirements as a result. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), by contrast, do not apply to NIKOS, as they concern a different field of use and functional scope and are therefore not relevant to NIKOS's deployment. As the only public address system for temporary and mobile applications consistently designed around the demands of mission-critical use, NIKOS has been used successfully for crisis-proof communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS deliver concrete cost savings?+
For temporary deployments such as Christopher Street Day in Berlin, NIKOS primarily reduces the costs of additional loudspeaker, control and communication channels. By centrally combining visitor guidance and announcements, there is no need to set up multiple parallel solutions, and the effort required for cabling, installation and coordination is significantly reduced. The need for distributed operating and reporting posts is also reduced because tasks are controlled centrally. This saves staff time during planning, setup, operation and dismantling.
Is NIKOS crisis-proof?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and independently of public communication networks. Because NIKOS does not rely on wired connections, the connection is automatically restored after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery providing up to 16 hours of operation and also supplies connected accessory modules. This means that visitor guidance for Christopher Street Day remains reliably operational even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed at short notice along the Christopher Street Day route?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules on different structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees within a few minutes and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation.
