NIKOS – Gedenkveranstaltung

Visitor Information for the European Capital of Culture 2028 in Bourges

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Reliably inform every visitor

At the European Capital of Culture 2028 in Bourges, visitor information must reach a large and international audience quickly. Programme changes, safety instructions and wayfinding information must remain clear in a busy environment. Large crowds can overload mobile networks, while a power failure or disruption to public networks can compromise conventional communication channels.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

One platform for everything: NIKOS unites visitor information, alerting, crowd management and control in a single, network-independent system. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units for individual locations, defined zones or the entire site, enabling targeted information to be delivered to visitors. Centralised announcements reduce the need for staff distributed throughout the site and limit the installation and operating costs of temporary communications.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Are announcements made via NIKOS standard-compliant?+
Yes — NIKOS fully meets DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). The system was designed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting tasks, technically built for everyday operation as well as for emergencies. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 sets out the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based solutions — does not depend on any external network, it is always immediately usable and fully meets the requirements set out in the standard. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 or DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are therefore not relevant for NIKOS in terms of approval. Since 2017, NIKOS has been used successfully many times as a public address system for temporary and mobile applications in mission-critical communication tasks. Acceptance by the relevant authorities is assessed for each project.
Can NIKOS be installed quickly for the European Capital of Culture 2028?+
Yes. NIKOS was developed for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can install and configure the modules within minutes on various structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees. A standard Schuko power socket ensures continuous operation. NIKOS uses the digital radio network provided for the event.
Does NIKOS remain operational in the event of a network or power failure?+
Yes. NIKOS uses its own autonomous radio network and operates independently of public communication networks and their availability. Because the system communicates by radio and does not rely on wired connections, the connection is restored automatically after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery providing up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. Even in the event of mobile network congestion, a disruption at the service provider or a power cut, visitor information for the European Capital of Culture 2028 remains reliable and operational.
Where does NIKOS generate cost benefits?+
NIKOS combines various functions on a single communications platform. The resulting savings offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. You can find specific examples of savings here. Systematically using the many available functions reduces the overall budget, enhances the level of safety and makes the teams’ work easier. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. This reduces equipment requirements, cabling work and the risk of tripping over cable runs. Centralised announcements, remote control and status monitoring replace some staff positions distributed throughout the site. For temporary events, the costs of planning, installing and operating safety technology are significantly reduced.
