NIKOS – Lange Nacht der Museen

Visitor information for the Long Night of Museums in Berlin

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Information must reach multiple museum sites simultaneously

During Berlin’s Long Night of Museums, visitors are spread across numerous museum sites, routes and waiting areas. Reliable visitor information requires service announcements, visitor guidance and safety-related announcements to be clearly understood both at the respective sites and across the entire event area. The distributed event structure and changing noise levels make it difficult to reach all visitors simultaneously. When public communication networks are operating at high capacity, additional information channels come under pressure.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Instead of multiple separate solutions: NIKOS unites visitor information, system monitoring, visitor guidance and control in a single network-independent platform. For events such as the Long Night of Museums in Berlin, NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, information messages, remote control and status monitoring in one platform. NIKOS [dispatcher]² can be used to address individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire event site. At museum sites with existing sound systems, NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission wirelessly on site and outputs it as an analogue audio signal. This reduces the need for separate loudspeaker systems and dedicated control units. Staff travel, operating stations and guard posts are reduced because recurring tasks are controlled centrally and monitored or executed by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS adhere to the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes. The basis is DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems, whose requirements NIKOS fully meets. Developed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting applications, NIKOS is technically designed for everyday use as well as for emergency situations. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based systems — does not depend on an external network, immediate usability is guaranteed at all times, meaning the standard is fully met. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are not relevant for the approval of NIKOS. Since its market launch in 2017, NIKOS has been the leading public address system for temporary and mobile applications, used successfully at some of the largest open-air events in Europe. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Does visitor information remain operational if the mobile network is overloaded?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and independently of public communication networks. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable connections, the connection is automatically restored after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also supplies connected accessory modules with power. This ensures that visitor information for the Long Night of Museums remains reliably operational even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
How is NIKOS mounted at different museum sites?+
NIKOS was developed for flexible outdoor use without permanent infrastructure. The modules can be mounted and individually configured by one or two people within just a few minutes on various structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees. A standard Schuko power outlet is sufficient for continuous operation.
What happens at sites without an existing sound system?+
NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output at locations without an existing sound system. This also integrates waiting areas and entrances into the announcement and information structure. Control is provided via NIKOS [dispatcher]² for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire event site.
