NIKOS – Basel Tattoo

Visitor Safety for Basel Tattoo

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Deliver warnings safely despite the music

At Basel Tattoo, loud music, dense crowds and international visitors make it difficult to communicate safety-critical information quickly. Warnings and instructions must remain clearly understandable even in high noise levels. When visitor numbers are high, the mobile network can also become overloaded quickly, further hindering communication in a dangerous situation.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

One platform for everything: NIKOS unites visitor information, alerting, crowd management and control in a single, network-independent system. NIKOS [dispatcher]² provides targeted control of individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire event site. This makes it possible to deliver information as needed while reducing the effort required for separate control technology and distributed operator stations.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS adhere to the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes. The basis is DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems, whose requirements NIKOS fully meets. Developed specifically for safety-relevant announcement and alerting applications, NIKOS is technically designed for everyday use as well as for emergency situations. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the relevant framework. Because NIKOS — unlike mobile network-based systems — does not depend on an external network, immediate usability is guaranteed at all times, meaning the standard is fully met. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) concern a different field of use and functional scope and are not relevant for the approval of NIKOS. Since its market launch in 2017, NIKOS has been the leading public address system for temporary and mobile applications, used successfully at some of the largest open-air events in Europe. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on NIKOS’s wide range of functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Can NIKOS be deployed quickly and flexibly?+
Yes, NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within just a few minutes on a range of structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power outlet is sufficient for continuous operation. NIKOS integrates an existing digital radio network.
Is NIKOS crisis-proof?+
Yes, NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communications networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable connections but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS is therefore much more resilient to disruptions in normal operations than many other systems and demonstrates the crisis resilience of this communications system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also supplies connected accessory modules with power. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has pulled out the wrong plug, NIKOS continues to operate. This ensures visitor safety at Basel Tattoo even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communications networks.
Where does using NIKOS create cost advantages?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can combine different functions on a single communications platform. These savings can quickly offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. You can find some specific examples of savings here. When its wide range of functions is used consistently, NIKOS not only increases safety levels and makes work easier for employees, but often also generates savings in the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. Staffing can also be reduced in a targeted manner: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operator stations distributed across the site can be controlled centrally and monitored or performed by NIKOS. This allows staff to be reduced or deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced events: monitoring emergency exit gates technically with NIKOS can replace the need to guard them, meaning that security posts at emergency exits can be eliminated or deployed more effectively elsewhere. In this way, rental and installation costs are offset by savings in staffing and other technology. Particularly at temporary, time-limited events, this significantly reduces the costs of planning, setting up and operating the safety technology.
