NIKOS – Basel Tattoo

Voice Alarm for the Basel Tattoo

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Clear warnings despite loud music

At the Basel Tattoo, large crowds and loud music make clear voice alarm announcements more difficult. Warnings and instructions must reach the audience clearly, even in high-noise conditions. Changing acoustic conditions make it challenging to reliably inform all visitors.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

With NIKOS, announcements, system monitoring, visitor information and device control come together on a single platform — fully independent of the public network. NIKOS [dispatcher]² centrally controls individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire event site. This reduces the effort required for separate control units and for managing multiple subsystems. Centralized operation also reduces the staffing required to conduct the voice alarm announcements.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS meet the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes, NIKOS is standard-compliant: the system meets DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting — usable both in everyday operation and in an emergency. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the decisive reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets these requirements because it operates independently of an external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at any time. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) do not apply to NIKOS, since they concern a different field of use and functional scope. As a public address system for temporary and mobile deployments, NIKOS has already been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will advise you on NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements.
How can announcements be understood at the Basel Tattoo despite the loud music?+
NIKOS [audio]² can interrupt the music systems for the duration of an announcement. This reduces the background noise level and significantly improves the intelligibility of announcements. Existing music systems can be used for the announcements, eliminating the need to set up a separate announcement sound system.
Can NIKOS be installed at short notice for voice alarm announcements at the Basel Tattoo?+
Yes, NIKOS was developed for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted on suitable temporary structures on site by one or two people within just a few minutes and configured individually. A standard Schuko power outlet is sufficient for continuous operation.
Does the voice alarm system at the Basel Tattoo remain operational in the event of a power or network failure?+
Yes, NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and independently of public communication networks. After an interruption, the radio connection is automatically re-established. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also powers connected accessory modules. This means that the voice alarm system for the Basel Tattoo remains operational in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
