NIKOS – Jahrmarkt

Voice alarm for the Cannstatter Wasen in Stuttgart

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Clear warnings despite fairground music

At the Cannstatter Wasen in Stuttgart, large numbers of visitors move between rides and fairground attractions amid high, continuous noise levels. In an emergency, warnings and instructions must reach everyone clearly and intelligibly despite the noise and crowds. Fairground sound systems can drown out important announcements and lengthen reaction times. When visitor density is high, the mobile network can also quickly become overloaded, making mobile-network-based systems unsuitable for voice alarm applications.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS brings together announcements, alerting, visitor guidance and device control in a single network-independent platform. NIKOS [audio]² interrupts the fairground sound systems for the duration of an announcement. This reduces the ambient noise level; existing sound systems can also be used for announcements when required, meaning that no separate announcement sound system needs to be installed. This reduces the effort required for materials, setup and supervision.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do NIKOS announcements meet the relevant standard requirements?+
Yes, NIKOS fully meets DIN EN 50849 "Electroacoustic Emergency Warning Systems". The system was specifically designed for safety-relevant announcements and alerting and is technically built for both everyday and emergency use. DIN EN 50849 is the relevant standard for radio-based ELA systems such as NIKOS. Because NIKOS, unlike mobile network-based systems, operates independently of an external network, immediate usability is guaranteed at all times — fully meeting the standard's requirements as a result. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), by contrast, do not apply to NIKOS, as they concern a different field of use and functional scope and are therefore not relevant to NIKOS's deployment. As the only public address system for temporary and mobile applications consistently designed around the demands of mission-critical use, NIKOS has been used successfully for crisis-proof communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where do cost benefits arise when using NIKOS?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can provide various functions through a unified communications platform. The rental and installation costs of NIKOS can quickly be offset by these savings. You can find some specific examples of savings here. When its wide range of functions is used consistently, NIKOS often not only increases the level of safety and makes employees’ work easier, but can even reduce the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. NIKOS can also help reduce staffing requirements in a targeted manner: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operating posts distributed across the site can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This allows staff numbers to be reduced or personnel to be deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced events, such as festivals or corporate events: monitoring emergency exit gates can be handled through their technical monitoring with NIKOS, meaning that security posts at emergency exits can be eliminated or deployed more effectively elsewhere. Rental and installation costs can thus be offset by savings in personnel and other technology. This significantly reduces the costs of planning, setup and operation of safety technology, especially at temporary, time-limited events.
Can NIKOS be deployed at short notice and used flexibly?+
Yes, NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor use without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within just a few minutes on a range of structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. NIKOS uses its own autonomous radio network and does not depend on an existing digital radio network.
How can announcements be heard when music is loud?+
NIKOS [flash]² uses a flashing light to signal to the conductor, bandleader or DJ that the music must be stopped immediately. In response to the light signal, the performance is paused so that announcements can be understood reliably. This ensures that important messages reach the audience even at high volume levels and in dense crowds.
