NIKOS – Sportevent

Voice Alarm for the Hamburg Triathlon

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Reach long stretches without relying on mobile networks

At the Hamburg Triathlon, the competition routes run through the city as long, narrow stretches connecting the start, transition and finish areas. Safety-critical announcements must reach spectators, volunteers, paramedics and course marshals simultaneously and intelligibly everywhere, even when the public mobile network is under heavy load or unavailable. In particular, distributing information over long distances makes it difficult to transmit warnings reliably along the entire route.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

NIKOS brings together announcements, alerting, visitor guidance and device control in a single network-independent platform. For events such as the Hamburg Triathlon, NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, information messages, remote control and status monitoring in a single platform. The system ensures that information can still be transmitted in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communications networks. For the course layout, rapidly deployable, radio-based units are positioned exactly where announcements are needed. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site. NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission by radio on site and outputs it as an analogue audio signal; NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output at locations without an existing PA system. This reduces the need for materials, setup work and personnel, as long cable runs, separate control units and additional operating points are no longer required.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS meet the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes, NIKOS is standard-compliant: the system meets DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting — usable both in everyday operation and in an emergency. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the decisive reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets these requirements because it operates independently of an external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at any time. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) do not apply to NIKOS, since they concern a different field of use and functional scope. As a public address system for temporary and mobile deployments, NIKOS has already been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
What cost benefits does NIKOS offer for the Hamburg Triathlon?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can be used to implement different functions through a single, standardised communications platform. These savings can quickly offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. You can find some specific examples of potential savings here. When its wide range of functions is used consistently, NIKOS often delivers not only a higher level of safety and easier working conditions for employees, but also savings in the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. NIKOS can also be used to reduce staffing requirements in a targeted way: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operating posts distributed along the route can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This allows personnel to be reduced or deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. Especially for temporary, time-limited events, this significantly reduces the costs of planning, setting up and operating the safety technology.
Is NIKOS resilient in the event of a network failure?+
NIKOS operates via its own self-contained radio network and is completely independent of public communications networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cabling but communicates by radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS is therefore far more resilient to disruptions in normal operations than many other systems, demonstrating the crisis resilience of this communications system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also powers connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has pulled the wrong plug, NIKOS continues to operate. This ensures that voice alarms for the Hamburg Triathlon remain reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communications networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed along the route at short notice?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor applications without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules on different structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, within just a few minutes and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power outlet is sufficient for continuous operation.
