NIKOS – Lange Nacht der Museen

Voice alarm for the Long Night of Museums in Berlin

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Different museum locations need a shared warning and announcement layer

During the Long Night of Museums in Berlin, visitor flows are distributed across many different museum locations and the routes between them. Safety announcements must be clearly understood at each individual site, even though there is no shared alarm structure. In the event of large crowds, evening operations and disruptions to public communication networks, the voice alarm must be quick to activate and clearly audible in the affected areas.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Announcements, system monitoring, crowd management and device control come together with NIKOS in a single platform independent of the public network. For events such as the Long Night of Museums in Berlin, NIKOS combines announcements, alarms, information messages, remote control and status monitoring on a single platform. NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission by radio on site and outputs it as an analogue audio signal to existing sound reinforcement equipment. NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output at locations without an existing sound system. Using NIKOS [dispatcher]², individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site can be addressed, announcements can be triggered manually and groups can be switched. This eliminates the need for separate handover solutions at each location and reduces staff travel, operator stations and security posts, as recurring tasks are controlled centrally and monitored or carried out by NIKOS.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do NIKOS announcements meet the relevant standard requirements?+
Yes, NIKOS fully meets DIN EN 50849 "Electroacoustic Emergency Warning Systems". The system was specifically designed for safety-relevant announcements and alerting and is technically built for both everyday and emergency use. DIN EN 50849 is the relevant standard for radio-based ELA systems such as NIKOS. Because NIKOS, unlike mobile network-based systems, operates independently of an external network, immediate usability is guaranteed at all times — fully meeting the standard's requirements as a result. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), by contrast, do not apply to NIKOS, as they concern a different field of use and functional scope and are therefore not relevant to NIKOS's deployment. As the only public address system for temporary and mobile applications consistently designed around the demands of mission-critical use, NIKOS has been used successfully for crisis-proof communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Does the voice alarm also work in the event of a power or network outage?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable connections but communicates by radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also supplies connected accessory modules. This ensures that the voice alarm for the Long Night of Museums remains reliably operational even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks.
How quickly can announcement points be set up at museum locations?+
NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor use without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within just a few minutes on a variety of structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power outlet is sufficient for continuous operation.
How can individual museum locations or visitor areas be addressed specifically during the Long Night of Museums?+
Using NIKOS [dispatcher]², announcements can be selected for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site. Individual groups can be triggered manually, several announcement locations can be switched together and specific areas can be addressed selectively. This ensures that safety announcements are delivered only where visitors need to be guided or informed. In the event of an incident spanning multiple locations, the announcement is broadcast simultaneously at all selected points.
