Voice Alarm for Wacken Open Air in Schleswig-Holstein

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Clear warnings despite stage noise

At Wacken Open Air in Schleswig-Holstein, voice alarm messages must remain intelligible even when stage volumes are high and visitor numbers are large. Concert operations, crowd movements and persistently high ambient noise make it difficult to communicate warnings and instructions to every area. In an emergency, visitors must be reached quickly and unambiguously, even if mobile networks are restricted by high demand.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

With NIKOS, announcements, system monitoring, visitor information and device control come together on a single platform — fully independent of the public network. Centralized operation via NIKOS [dispatcher]² reduces the effort required to coordinate voice alarms and other safety functions. By combining announcements, remote control and status monitoring, the need for separate devices, cabling and operating personnel is reduced. This lowers setup and operating costs.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Is NIKOS designed to meet the relevant standards for announcements?+
Yes, indeed: NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. The system was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting and is technically designed for both everyday operation and emergency situations. DIN EN 50849 represents the relevant reference framework for ELA systems. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS does not depend on any external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at all times — fully meeting the standard as a result. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to NIKOS, as they are not applicable to radio-based public address systems like NIKOS. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS deliver cost benefits?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can implement a range of different functions through a single communications platform. These savings can quickly offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. Here you will find several specific examples of potential savings. When its wide range of functions is used consistently, NIKOS often not only increases the level of safety and makes employees’ work easier, but can even reduce the overall budget. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. In addition, NIKOS can specifically replace personnel: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operating posts distributed throughout the site can be handled from a single location through centralized announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This can reduce staffing requirements or allow personnel to be deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest potential for savings arises at fenced-in events such as Wacken Open Air: monitoring emergency exit gates technically with NIKOS can cover the security of these gates, meaning that guards at emergency exits can be eliminated or deployed more effectively elsewhere. In this way, rental and installation costs are offset by savings in personnel and other technology. This significantly reduces the costs of planning, setup and operation of safety technology, especially at temporary events with a limited duration.
Is NIKOS crisis-proof?+
Yes. NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communications networks and their availability. This makes the system highly resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable connections but communicates via radio, the connection is automatically restored after an interruption. NIKOS is therefore far more resilient to disruptions in normal operations than many other systems, demonstrating the crisis resilience of this communications system. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with a runtime of up to 16 hours and also supplies connected accessory modules. Even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider has been hacked or someone has unplugged the wrong cable, NIKOS continues to operate. This ensures that voice alarm for Wacken Open Air remains reliably functional even in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communications networks.
Can NIKOS be deployed quickly and flexibly?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within just a few minutes on a range of structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation. NIKOS uses an existing digital radio network with.
