NIKOS – Jahrmarkt

Voice alarm system for the Augsburg Plärrer

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Safety announcements must reliably cut through noise and crowds

At the Augsburg Plärrer, dense visitor flows, fairground rides and the showmen’s sound systems combine to create persistently high noise levels. In a hazardous situation, warnings and instructions must reach visitors clearly despite the noise and crowds. When visitor density is high, the mobile network can quickly become overloaded; in the event of a power failure or local disruptions, communication channels that are not self-sufficient lose their availability.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

One platform for everything: NIKOS unites visitor information, alerting, crowd management and control in a single, network-independent system. For events such as the Augsburg Plärrer, NIKOS combines announcements, alarm activation, information messages, remote control and status monitoring in one platform. The system ensures that information can still be transmitted in the event of a power failure or disruptions to public communication networks. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units as required for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site, while NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission locally via radio and outputs it as an analogue audio signal. The showmen’s existing sound systems can be used for announcements and supplemented with NIKOS [horn]² at locations without an existing public-address system; this eliminates the need for separate announcement sound systems, long cable runs and additional operator posts.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Do announcements made with NIKOS comply with the applicable standards?+
Yes. NIKOS meets the requirements of DIN EN 50849 (electroacoustic emergency warning systems). NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant public address and alerting applications and is technically designed for use in both everyday and emergency situations. For electroacoustic emergency warning systems, DIN EN 50849 is the relevant reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets the requirements specified therein, as it does not depend on an external network and can therefore be used immediately at any time. Other standards known from safety technology, such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems), do not apply to the field of use and functional scope of NIKOS and are therefore not relevant for approval. NIKOS is a public address system for temporary and mobile applications and has been successfully deployed in numerous mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
How can announcements remain intelligible while the showmen’s sound systems are operating?+
NIKOS [audio]² interrupts the showmen’s sound systems for the duration of an announcement. This reduces the background noise level and significantly improves intelligibility. The existing sound systems can also be used for the announcements, so there is no need to set up a separate announcement sound system.
Can NIKOS be configured at short notice for changing site layouts?+
Yes. NIKOS was developed specifically for flexible outdoor deployments without permanent infrastructure. The modules can be mounted by one or two people within just a few minutes on a variety of structures, such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees, and configured individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation.
Where does using NIKOS deliver cost benefits?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can be used to implement different functions through a single, unified communication platform. These savings can quickly offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. You can find some specific examples of savings here. When its wide range of functions is used consistently, NIKOS often delivers savings in the overall budget in addition to increasing the level of safety and making employees’ work easier. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. NIKOS can also specifically replace personnel: tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operator posts distributed across the site can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This allows personnel to be reduced or deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced events: Monitoring emergency exit gates technically with NIKOS can replace their guarding, meaning that guards at emergency exits are no longer required or can be deployed more effectively elsewhere. Rental and installation costs can thus be offset by savings in personnel and other technology. This significantly reduces the costs of planning, installation and operation of safety technology, especially for temporary events with a limited duration.
