NIKOS – Weihnachtsmarkt

Voice alarm systems for Christmas markets in Hamburg

autonomous reliable cost-effective

NIKOS is not a conventional PA system, but a radio-based public address, alarm and control system for large events, construction sites and crisis situations, which you can rent by the day through certified partners and either integrate into your PA or use on its own.

Challenge

Instant announcements when access barriers or fences are breached

Christmas markets in Hamburg attract large numbers of visitors over several weeks to densely built-up city-centre areas and temporarily established sites. In an emergency, warnings and instructions must remain intelligible despite crowds, ambient noise and dispersed market stalls. At the same time, security concepts for Christmas markets are subject to intense public scrutiny, as decisions on operations, access restrictions and evacuation must be made quickly and reliably.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

With NIKOS, announcements, system monitoring, visitor information and device control come together on a single platform — fully independent of the public network. For events such as Christmas markets in Hamburg, NIKOS combines announcements, alerting, information messages, remote control and status monitoring on a single platform. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units as required, targeting individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire site. NIKOS [audio]² receives the voice transmission on site via radio and outputs it as an analogue audio signal; at locations without an existing public address system, NIKOS [horn]² supplements the acoustic output. This enables voice alarm, visitor information and system control to be operated through a unified infrastructure, reducing the need for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions as well as separate operating procedures.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS meet the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes, NIKOS is standard-compliant: the system meets DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting — usable both in everyday operation and in an emergency. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the decisive reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets these requirements because it operates independently of an external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at any time. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) do not apply to NIKOS, since they concern a different field of use and functional scope. As a public address system for temporary and mobile deployments, NIKOS has already been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be happy to advise you on the wide range of NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Where does NIKOS deliver cost benefits?+
Depending on the application, NIKOS can provide different functions through a single communication platform. These savings can quickly offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. You can find some specific examples of potential savings here. NIKOS mainly reduces the effort required for separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions. Material requirements and cabling work are reduced, and information and emergency announcements can be made from a single location. Staff travel, operating stations and guard posts are also reduced because recurring tasks are controlled centrally and monitored or carried out by NIKOS.
How does voice alarm remain operational during a power failure?+
NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery providing up to 16 hours of operating time and also powers connected accessory modules. This keeps announcement points operational even if the power supply fails. As a result, voice alarm systems for Christmas markets remain fully functional even during a power outage.
Can NIKOS be installed at Christmas markets at short notice?+
Yes. NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules within just a few minutes on various structures such as lampposts, stages, stands or trees and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power connection is sufficient for continuous operation.
