Crowd Management for CHIO Aachen

autonomous reliable cost-effective
Challenge

Guide visitors safely at the touch of a button

At CHIO Aachen, crowd management is particularly challenging due to high visitor density, a noisy environment and international visitors. Even when situations change at short notice, visitor flows must be directed purposefully to safe areas. Warnings and instructions must remain clearly understandable despite background noise and crowds. When attendance is high, the mobile network becomes overloaded and cannot be relied on for coordination.

Solution

One unified solution for everyday use and emergencies

Announcements, system monitoring, crowd management and device control come together with NIKOS in a single platform independent of the public network. NIKOS [dispatcher]² controls the announcement units for individual announcement locations, specific areas or the entire CHIO Aachen event site. This makes it possible to direct visitors in a targeted manner and manage tasks centrally that would otherwise require several security or operator posts distributed across the site.

FAQ

Information for planners and organisers

Does NIKOS meet the applicable standards for announcements?+
Yes, NIKOS is standard-compliant: the system meets DIN EN 50849 for electroacoustic emergency warning systems. NIKOS was developed specifically for safety-relevant announcements and alerting — usable both in everyday operation and in an emergency. For ELA systems, DIN EN 50849 forms the decisive reference framework. Unlike mobile network-based systems, NIKOS fully meets these requirements because it operates independently of an external network and is therefore immediately ready for use at any time. Other safety-related standards such as DIN EN 54, DIN VDE 0833-4 and DIN 14675 (voice alarm systems) do not apply to NIKOS, since they concern a different field of use and functional scope. As a public address system for temporary and mobile deployments, NIKOS has already been used successfully many times for mission-critical communication tasks since 2017. RADACOM and your regional NIKOS partner will be pleased to advise you on NIKOS functions and support you in implementing the requirements cost-effectively.
Can NIKOS be deployed quickly and flexibly?+
Yes, NIKOS was specifically developed for flexible outdoor deployments without fixed infrastructure. One or two people can mount the modules on different structures such as streetlights, stages, trees, stalls or decorations within just a few minutes and configure them individually. A standard Schuko power outlet is sufficient for continuous operation. NIKOS integrates with an existing digital radio network.
Is NIKOS resilient in a crisis?+
Yes, NIKOS operates via its own autonomous radio network and is completely independent of public communication networks and their availability. The system is resistant to external influences. Since NIKOS does not rely on cable routes but communicates by radio, the connection is automatically re-established after an interruption. NIKOS responds resiliently to disruptions in normal operations and keeps communication secure even in crisis situations. NIKOS [audio]² has an internal battery with up to 16 hours of operating time and also supplies connected accessory modules. NIKOS continues to operate even if the mobile network is overloaded, the internet provider fails or the power supply is interrupted. This keeps communication for crowd management at CHIO Aachen reliably functional even in the event of a power outage or disruptions to public communication networks.
Where does NIKOS deliver cost benefits?+
NIKOS combines different functions on a single, unified communication platform. Savings on personnel and additional technology offset the rental and installation costs of NIKOS. You can find specific examples of savings here. NIKOS increases the level of safety, makes employees' work easier and reduces the overall budget. For crowd management and other safety-critical coordination tasks, separate loudspeaker, control and communication solutions are not required: NIKOS combines employee alerting, visitor information and system control on one platform. This reduces the need for materials and cabling and lowers the risk of people tripping over cable ramps. Tasks that would otherwise require several security, reporting or operator posts distributed across the site can be handled from a single location through central announcements, remote control and status monitoring. This either reduces staffing requirements or allows personnel to be deployed more effectively at safety-critical points. The greatest savings potential arises at fenced events: Technical monitoring of emergency exit gates with NIKOS replaces security posts at emergency exits or enables those personnel to be deployed more effectively elsewhere. This offsets the rental and installation costs through savings on personnel and other technology. For temporary, time-limited events, the costs of planning, setting up and operating the safety technology are significantly reduced.
